Joel Harvey on SoundBetter

I will produce, write, mix & master your next track for £1,500 + 50% of the master and publishing rights. Unlimited revisions. Satisfaction guaranteed.

Hi, I'm Joel, and I specialise in rapping, ghostwriting, songwriting, and production. I've spent over 20 years crafting my own music to a professional standard, and now I'm offering my skills as a tailor-made service.

The demo track on this profile was written, performed and produced by me, and it only showcases just a small fraction of my ability. Aside from my favourite genre (Hiphop), I also excel in making RnB, Neo Soul, Drum and Bass, Reggae, House, UK Funky, Grime, UK Garage, Afrobeats, and UK Drill.

The great thing about working with me is that it's risk-free, because I offer unlimited revisions at every stage of the process. That means I don't start the production until you're happy with the lyrics, I don't start mixing until you're happy with the production, I don't start mastering until you're happy with the mix, and you don't pay me a penny until you're happy with the master.

– In other words, I literally guarantee your satisfaction.

Interview with Joel Harvey

  1. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  2. A: I’m working on my Hiphop album.

  3. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  4. A: Conor Dalton for Mixing and Mastering.

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: Both.

  7. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  8. A: Paint the picture. The better you clarify your goals - the easier my job becomes. Don’t worry about hurting my feelings, be direct with your feedback, and I’ll work at it until it’s perfect.

  9. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  10. A: MacBook Pro, Maschine MK3, Komplete Kontrol Keyboard, Sennheiser HD600’s

  11. Q: How would you describe your style?

  12. A: Sophisticated and soulful hiphop

  13. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  14. A: I’d love to work with Anderson .Paak because he’s the greatest.

  15. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  16. A: The chord progression is the foundation of the song. It has to sound good enough on its own, without anything else added. If you nail the chord progression - everything else will fall into place.

  17. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  18. A: Hiphop, RnB, Soul, Drum & Bass, Jungle, House.

  19. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  20. A: Rapping, Songwriting & Production.

  21. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  22. A: I have excellent rhythmic and melodic intuition. I’m also highly articulate, so my lyrics are always interesting.

  23. Q: What's your typical work process?

  24. A: I tend to write my lyrics first while walking through the woods. Once I’ve wrote the lyrics, I build the basic beat around them, and record the vocals. After that, I go to town on the production, the arrangement, the automation and FX.

  25. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  26. A: I make my beats on the Native Instruments Maschine MK3 & Komplete Kontrol Keyboard, along with Logic Pro on the Mac Mini. I’m a student at Point Blank Music School in London, so I have 24/7 access to world class recording facilities.

  27. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  28. A: I have 20 years experience in making my own music, but I have only just begun to offer my skills on the market.

  29. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  30. A: I guarantee satisfaction. If you're not happy, neither am I.

  31. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  32. A: It doesn't feel like a job. I’ve been doing it for free for 20 years, it’s fuelled by passion, not money.

  33. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  34. A: 1. Give me an example of a song you love, and why? 2. Give me an example of a song you hate, and why? 3. Why are you doing this? 4. What’s your vision?

  35. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  36. A: I've been making my own music for over 20 years.

  37. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  38. A: My favourite producers are Dr. Dre, Pharrell, J Dilla, Hi Tek, Just Blaze, No ID, Adrian Younge, Mark Ronson, El Michels Affair, Chris Mazuera, Kanye West, Rodney Jerkins, Madlib, Timbaland, Pete Rock, Th3ory Hazit, K Fresh, The Kount and Alchemist.
