Interview with Ernest Adams

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: One project I’m especially proud of is my full reproduction remix of Tove Lo’s “Talking Body.” I’d heard the song countless times at work and loved the aggressive energy in the hook. That curiosity led me to dive deeper into her music, and I quickly fell in love with her songwriting, mixing, and production style—a fresh explosion of sound and energy I hadn’t experienced before. This remix was my first time resampling a pop track. I started by finding the acapella and syncing it to the right BPM. The core of the track came together in about 30 minutes, and then I spent time fine-tuning specific parts to make it my own, blending my production and mixing style with the original vibe. I still listen to this remix regularly. It became the blueprint for how I adapted my production style toward EDM. This project confirmed for me that I can produce across genres and tempos. I thrive on challenges because they push me to use my tools and skills efficiently and creatively.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I’m currently working on an EDM house mix that might be my first official single, aimed at electronic music fans. I’m really proud of how it’s coming together—especially the mix—because a great mix makes the track pop and connect with listeners. My creative process involves building the vibe from scratch, layering synths and beats carefully, and constantly tweaking until every element feels just right. For me, mixing isn’t just technical; it’s where the emotion and energy truly come alive.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: No, I don’t have any personal connections on SoundBetter to recommend to clients.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: For me, it’s a bit of both analog and digital. Growing up in the ’90s, I developed an ear for that nostalgic era where a lot of hit records were mixed on classic analog consoles like the SSL 4000, Neve 8078, and API desks. That warmth and character left a lasting impression on me. At the same time, I appreciate digital because it bridges the gap between that old-school vibe and the possibilities the younger generation of music creators and fans are excited about. Digital tools are like the glue that holds together what analog brought to the human ear—combining precision with that soulful feel. A taste of both is the sweet spot, because without analog, there wouldn’t be digital. And I think many music lovers, myself included, wouldn’t be as open to digital music production if it didn’t carry that analog spirit.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: My promise to clients is to listen carefully, communicate openly, and deliver high-quality mixes that bring out the best in their music. I’m committed to working closely with you to achieve a sound that feels authentic and impactful, always respecting your creative goals and deadlines.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: What I like most about my job is the control I have over something as simple, yet incredibly powerful, as a waveform. Whether it’s voice or instrument, being able to digitally shape, manipulate, and reconstruct sound is, in my opinion, a truly colossal and fascinating process. It’s amazing to transform raw audio into something that moves people.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: How much creative input will I have? Can you match this sound or reference track? What do you think of my song? How long until I get the mix back?

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: The biggest misconception is that mixing and producing are just technical chores—simple adjustments anyone can make. In truth, it’s an art form that blends creativity, psychology, and precision engineering. Every decision I make shapes how a listener emotionally connects with the music. It’s about crafting an experience, not just tweaking sounds.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: How many songs or tracks are you looking to have mixed or produced? What’s the overall quality or state of the songs (on a scale of 1–10)? Do you have reference tracks or a particular sound/style you want to achieve? How much creative freedom will I have within the project? Are the stems or multitracks organized and labeled? Are there any specific elements you want emphasized or de-emphasized in the mix? What’s your intended release platform or format (streaming, radio, etc.)? Do you have any deadlines or specific timelines? Have you worked with an engineer before? If so, what did you like or dislike? Is there anything about the song or mix that’s particularly important to you?

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: When hiring a mixing engineer or producer, it’s important to find someone who listens carefully and understands what you want from your music. Good communication and willingness to collaborate make a big difference. Look for someone passionate, reliable, and focused on making your song sound as good as possible—not just the cheapest option.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: If I were on a desert island and could only bring five pieces of gear, they’d be a PC, headphones, FL Studio, Waves plugins, and a MIDI keyboard. That setup gives me everything I need to create and mix music anywhere.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I began my musical journey in 2004, initially focused on rapping. Around that time, FL Studio was still emerging, and my aspirations included performing, crafting beats, and mixing. Over time, my passion shifted toward creating beats and refining mixes, discovering how much impact mixing has in transforming a track from ordinary to exceptional. I started recording emerging artists using basic tools like Cool Edit Pro and Cakewalk before upgrading to professional equipment and software later. My first setup included FL Studio 4 and Nuendo. With over 15 years of experience, I’ve developed complementary skills as both a producer and engineer, allowing me to elevate every project I work on.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: I’d describe my style as genre-bending and unorthodox—complex yet simple—with a twist of West Coast funk and down-south grit. It’s a blend that keeps things fresh, grounded, and full of character.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: I would love to work with Tove Lo. I’ve been a fan since I first heard her second album—her voice is uniquely captivating in the EDM world. Her songwriting is incredibly strong and visual, which is essential for creating powerful songs. She has a versatile vocal range that inspires me, and I’m confident I could come in on any day—good or bad—and deliver a full production or at least a clear direction for the track. Tove Lo is a truly talented artist whose production perfectly complements her voice, making her an ideal collaborator.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Sound selection is key when making music. Having a well-organized library of quality sounds speeds up your workflow and keeps creativity flowing. Remember, one strong melody can be the difference between a hit and a dud.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: I mainly work on rap, hip hop, and R&B, but I’m open to all genres. As long as I know the direction you want or have a reference track, I can adapt my approach to bring out the best in your music.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: My strongest skill is crafting mixes that deliver clarity and emotion in perfect balance. I focus on blending every element so they work together naturally, resulting in a rich, dynamic sound that enhances the impact of the music.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: What I bring to a song is purposeful sound—a craft refined over 15 years of hands-on experience. My ears are trained to catch every detail that impacts clarity, from subtle noise and phase issues to balance and dynamics that affect the listener’s experience. The mixes I deliver have a bright, open quality that never strains the ears, even at high volumes. Drums hit with punch and presence, highs shimmer with air, and every element sits cohesively in the mix to support the song’s emotion and energy. I believe in keeping mixes clear and impactful without overcomplicating things, adding style and personality in ways that serve the music. Beyond technical skill, it’s my finely tuned ear and intuitive sense of what feels right or wrong that guides my decisions and shapes the final sound. More than just a technician, I’m a passionate collaborator who listens closely, communicates openly, and tailors my approach to bring out the unique character of each track. When you work with me, you get someone who cares deeply about making your music connect authentically with your audience.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: My process isn’t always linear—there’s no one-size-fits-all. I mentally check several key areas depending on the mix: Is the arrangement solid? Are vocals in tune? Is the overall quality good or does it need repair? I listen closely, analyze, adjust levels, organize elements, and add flavor with plugins. I revisit the mix multiple times, focusing on removing unwanted frequencies or enhancing parts to add value to the song as a whole, ensuring it sounds cohesive and polished from start to finish.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: I work primarily in FL Studio, my go-to DAW for production, mixing, and arranging. My setup features Adam Audio T8V studio monitors for accurate sound, a reliable Focusrite audio interface, plus trusted plugins from Waves Audio, Solid State Logic, FabFilter, and others that help me shape and polish every track. I focus on a streamlined workflow balancing creativity with technical precision to ensure each mix translates well across all listening platforms.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: I’m inspired by artists and producers like Avicii for his memorable house music melodies, Dr. Dre for his masterful drum mixing techniques, and Kanye West for his innovative sampling skills. Each of these artists influences the style and quality I strive to achieve in my own work.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: I primarily provide professional mixing services, focusing on creating clear, warm, and dynamic mixes that bring out the best in every track.
