Interview with David Wykee

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: One project I’m especially proud of was mixing and mastering a single for an emerging artist. My role was to take their raw recordings and shape them into a cohesive, polished body of work that truly captured their sound and emotion.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I’m working on new music for an artist under my record label, Wykee Records.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: I don’t personally know anyone on SoundBetter to recommend right now, but I always encourage clients to check reviews and portfolios carefully to find a provider who matches their style and needs.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: I use a hybrid approach, combining both analog and digital tools to get the best of both worlds. Analog gear adds warmth, character, and subtle harmonics that bring life to a mix, while digital tools offer precision, flexibility, and recallability. This balance lets me craft mixes that feel organic yet polished and perfectly tailored to each project.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: My promise to my clients is to deliver professional, high-quality mixes and masters that honor their artistic vision. I commit to clear communication, timely delivery, and dedicated revisions to ensure they’re completely satisfied with the final result. Your music deserves the best, and I’m here to make that happen.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: What I like most about my job is helping artists bring their vision to life and hearing their music transformed into a polished, professional product. It’s incredibly rewarding to be part of someone’s creative journey and contribute to the emotional impact of their songs. Plus, every project is a new challenge that pushes me to grow and stay inspired.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: Customers often ask how long their project will take. I usually deliver within 3-7 days, depending on complexity, and keep you updated throughout. They want to know how many revisions are included; most packages offer 2 revisions, with additional ones available if needed. I also get asked what I need to get started, which is high-quality, properly labeled stems, plus any reference tracks and notes about your vision. Many wonder if I can make their song sound like a specific artist, I aim to bring out your unique sound using references as a guide, rather than copying others.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: The biggest misconception is that mixing and mastering is just about making music louder or adding effects. In reality, it’s a careful balance of technical skill and artistic judgment enhancing clarity, dynamics, and emotion while preserving the artist’s vision and making sure the track sounds great on every playback system. It’s as much about subtle detail and creativity as it is about volume.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: When working with new clients, I ask about their overall vision or vibe for the track, any reference songs or mixes they love, preferred delivery format and deadline, the number of tracks or stems included, and whether they want me to focus on specific elements like vocals. I also inquire about any particular issues or challenges with the recordings and how many revisions they expect. These questions help me tailor the mix or master to their needs and ensure we’re aligned from the start.

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: My advice is to choose a provider who truly listens to your vision and communicates clearly throughout the process. Look for someone with experience in your genre, a strong portfolio, and positive reviews. Don’t hesitate to ask questions about their workflow, revision policies, and turnaround times to make sure you’re comfortable. Clear communication and mutual understanding are key to getting the best results and a mix or master that truly represents your sound.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: If I were on a desert island and could take only five pieces of gear, I’d bring a laptop with DAW software as the core for recording and mixing, quality headphones for accurate monitoring anywhere, an audio interface to connect microphones and instruments, a portable MIDI controller for composing and controlling sounds, and a backup hard drive or SSD to store and protect all my work. With these essentials, I could keep creating music even off the grid.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I started my career as a musician and gradually transitioned into audio engineering, drawn to the creative control and detail of mixing and mastering. I studied production, worked in studios, and honed my skills over the years through hands-on projects and collaborations. I've been professionally mixing and mastering for over 10 years, helping artists shape their sound and bring their music to a professional level.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: My style is clean, modern, and punchy. I focus on clarity, depth, and vibe bringing out the emotion in every track while making sure it hits hard, and sounds polished across all systems.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: I’d love to work with Billie Eilish because her music blends intimate vocals with innovative production. Helping bring out the subtle details and emotion in her tracks would be an exciting challenge and a great opportunity to push creative boundaries.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Always mix at a low volume, it helps you make better decisions about balance, EQ, and dynamics without ear fatigue. If your mix sounds great quietly, it'll sound amazing loud.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: I usually work on hip-hop, R&B, pop, and electronic music. These genres demand clean, punchy mixes with strong low-end, clear vocals, and a polished, modern sound which is exactly what I specialize in delivering.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: My strongest skill is mixing translation ensuring a mix sounds consistently great across all playback systems, from studio monitors to phones and car speakers. I balance technical precision with a musical ear, allowing the emotion and intent of the track to shine through while maintaining clarity, depth, and punch.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I bring clarity, balance, and emotion to a song. Through expert mixing and mastering, I enhance the energy, tighten the sound, and make sure every element shine so the track sounds professional, impactful, and release ready. I focus on preserving the artist's vision while elevating the overall quality to meet industry standards.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: My typical work process starts with carefully reviewing the client’s raw tracks and notes. I begin by cleaning up audio and organizing sessions, then balance levels and apply EQ to create clarity. Next, I add compression, effects, and automation to enhance dynamics and emotion. After the initial mix, I send it to the client for feedback and make revisions as needed. Once the mix is approved, I move on to mastering, polishing the track for loudness, consistency, and playback across all systems, before delivering the final files. Communication and collaboration are key throughout to ensure the client’s vision shines through.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: My studio setup is designed for precision and creativity. I use a DAW like Pro Tools or FL Studios, paired with high-quality studio monitors like Yamaha HS8 and reference headphones for critical listening. My setup includes top-notch audio interfaces, outboard gear such as compressors and EQs for analog warmth, and acoustic treatment to ensure accurate sound. This combination helps me deliver mixes and master's that translate well across all listening environments.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: I’m inspired by legends like Dr. Dre for his legendary mixing and attention to detail, Timbaland for innovative production techniques, and Dave Pensado for his mastering expertise and passion for audio quality. Their creativity and dedication push me to keep refining my craft and stay innovative in every project.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: The most common type of work I do for clients is professional mixing and mastering, taking raw audio tracks and turning them into polished, industry-ready songs. I balance levels, enhance clarity, apply effects, and ensure the final product meets commercial standards across all playback systems. Whether it’s vocals, instruments, or full productions, I help artists bring out the best in their music.
