Interview with Y@MAN RAU

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: One project I’m especially proud of is a track called “Ganga” released under Voxpropel. It started as a raw, emotional vocal and a minimal beat—but the artist wanted it to feel cinematic, weightless, and immersive. I handled the full mix and master, carefully sculpting the space, balancing the dynamics, and layering subtle textures to give it that floating, dreamlike quality. The final result not only matched the artist’s vision—it actually inspired the visual direction for the music video. Hearing how it resonated with listeners made it a standout moment in my journey.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Right now, I’m finishing up a series of singles under Voxpropel, blending chill electronic and hip-hop influences with ambient textures. I’m also collaborating with a few indie artists on upcoming EPs—handling full mix and master duties to craft a cohesive sonic identity across their projects. Every track is different, but the goal remains the same: to make it hit with emotion, clarity, and energy.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: I’m always open to collaborating with talented artists and professionals on SoundBetter, and I’m actively building connections within the community. While I currently handle most of the mix and master work personally, I’m happy to recommend vocalists, producers, or session musicians based on your project needs—and I always ensure that anyone I suggest aligns with the same standard of quality and professionalism I deliver.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Both. I believe in using the best of both worlds. Digital offers unmatched flexibility, speed, and precision—perfect for modern workflows and revisions. Analog brings warmth, saturation, and subtle imperfections that add soul and texture to a mix. I primarily work in the digital domain, but I use analog-style emulations and select analog gear to capture that classic vibe when needed. It’s not about choosing sides—it’s about choosing what best serves the song.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: I promise to treat your music with the same care, passion, and precision as I would my own. You’ll get a mix or master that’s not just technically solid, but emotionally impactful and tailored to your vision. I’ll listen closely, communicate clearly, and deliver on time—every time. Your sound matters, and I’m here to make sure it shines with clarity, depth, and intention.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: What I love most is helping artists hear their music the way they imagined it—or even better. That moment when a client hears the final mix or master and says, “Wow, that’s exactly what I was going for,” is unbeatable. I enjoy turning raw emotion into a finished sound that feels alive, powerful, and polished. Every project is a new story, and I get to help shape how it’s told through sound. That creative trust means everything to me.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: One of the most common questions I get is: “Can you make my song sound like some FAMOUS ARTIST?” My answer: Absolutely—as a reference. I love using your favorite artists to understand the vibe, loudness, and texture you’re aiming for. But my goal isn’t to clone someone else—it’s to give your song a unique, professional polish that fits your voice and message. Together, we can make it sound inspired, yet original. Another frequent one: “How long will it take?” My standard turnaround is within 48 hours of receiving all files, and I’m always transparent and communicative throughout the process.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: That mixing and mastering is just about turning up the volume or slapping on presets. In reality, it’s a deep, creative process that involves technical skill, emotional sensitivity, and a trained ear for balance, space, and tone. People often think it’s a quick fix—but it’s really about enhancing the soul of the track without losing its essence. The goal isn’t just to make it louder—it’s to make it live and breathe.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: I always start with: • What’s the story or emotion behind the song? • Do you have any reference tracks or artists whose sound you admire? • What’s your vision for the final mix/master—clean and open, punchy and loud, warm and vintage, etc.? • Are there any elements you want to highlight or keep subtle? • What’s your release plan (streaming, radio, performance, etc.)? These questions help me align with your artistic intent and deliver a result that feels exactly right for you. Every mix is a collaboration—your clarity helps me bring your sound to life.

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Be clear about your vision and expectations. Share reference tracks, your creative goals, and what you want the listener to feel. A great mix/master isn’t just about technical polish—it’s about translating emotion. Also, look for someone who listens, communicates well, and treats your project like it matters. Chemistry and understanding go a long way in shaping your sound. Don’t just hire someone with gear—hire someone who gets you.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: If I were on a desert island, I’d pack smart and light. I’d take my MacBook Air with Logic Pro X, loaded with my essential plugins like FabFilter and iZotope Ozone. For headphones, my Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro would be a must. A compact Arturia MiniLab 3 would handle all my MIDI needs, and I’d carry a Shure MV7—a USB/XLR mic that’s versatile, rugged, and sounds great even outside a studio. That setup would keep me mixing, mastering, and creating—under the sun or stars.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I started as a curious listener obsessed with how music feels—not just sounds. That curiosity led me into production, and eventually into mixing and mastering, where I found my true calling: shaping the emotional and technical core of a track. Over the years, I trained myself through hands-on experience, mentorships, and countless hours in the DAW. I’ve been mixing and mastering professionally for over 4 years, working on 50+ tracks, with 30+ officially released under my creative entity, Voxpropel. What began as passion has grown into a precise craft—and I’m still learning, evolving, and loving every moment of it.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: My style is clean, emotive, and immersive. I aim for sonic balance that hits hard where it should, but also leaves space for emotion to breathe. I focus on punchy low-end, warm mids, and crystal-clear highs—always tuned to the mood of the track. Whether it’s chill, hip hop, or electronic, I strive to give every song a cinematic feel with commercial polish, while preserving the raw soul that makes it yours.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: I’d love to work with AR Rahman—not just because he’s a musical genius, but because his sound design is deeply emotional, technically adventurous, and spiritually resonant. His ability to blend tradition with innovation would push me to explore new sonic dimensions. On the global front, Bruno Mars would be a dream collaboration. His music is the perfect blend of vintage soul, pop precision, and modern production flair. His attention to detail, vocal performance, and infectious grooves would be a thrill to shape in the mix. Working with an artist of that caliber would be both a challenge and an honor.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Less is more. Instead of stacking endless layers, focus on giving each sound its own space through EQ, panning, and dynamics. A clean, intentional arrangement always translates better in the mix—and the master. Clarity wins over clutter.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: I work across a diverse spectrum, but I specialize in Chill, Drum & Bass, Electric Pop, Hip Hop, Folk/Acoustic, Jazz, and Techno. Each genre brings its own emotion and energy, and I love tailoring my mix and master approach to enhance that unique vibe. Whether it’s lush ambient textures, hard-hitting 808s, or delicate acoustic spaces—I focus on making the sound not just clean, but expressive and immersive. Flexibility across genres is one of my biggest strengths.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: My strongest skill is emotional translation through sound—taking raw recordings and shaping them into mixes that feel as powerful as they sound. Technically, I excel at vocal treatment, stereo imaging, and dynamic control—ensuring each element sits perfectly in the mix without losing character. But beyond the tools, it’s my ability to connect with the artist’s vision and bring it to life with depth, clarity, and punch that sets my work apart.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I bring clarity, emotion, and identity to every song I touch. My job isn’t just to balance levels—it’s to uncover the soul of the track and bring it forward. I shape the mix so the vocals cut, the groove hits, and the energy flows exactly how it’s meant to. Whether it’s a dark, moody vibe or a bright, euphoric anthem, I translate emotion into sound. Artists come to me not just for polish, but for that extra depth, dimension, and feeling that makes a song unforgettable. Every track is treated like a future favorite.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: Every project begins with understanding the artist’s vision. I start by reviewing reference tracks, notes, and creative direction to align with the desired sound. Once I receive the stems, I organize and clean the session, ensuring phase alignment and optimal gain staging. I then move into mixing, focusing on clarity, balance, and emotional impact—sculpting each element with EQ, compression, reverb, and automation to create depth and cohesion. After client feedback and up to 3 revisions, I proceed to mastering, where I polish the final mix for loudness, tonal consistency, and platform translation (Spotify, YouTube, radio, etc.). The final master is delivered within 48 hours of receiving all files. Communication is key throughout—I keep my clients looped in and involved. It’s not just about technical perfection, it’s about making your music feel right.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: My studio is a hybrid setup designed for clarity, depth, and creative flexibility. I work in Logic Pro X, powered by Komplete 14 and the Arturia V Collection for rich synths and sound design. I capture vocals with an AKG P420 condenser mic and monitor with KRK Rokit 8 G4s and Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro headphones to ensure accurate translation across playback systems. On the software side, I use the FabFilter Total Bundle, Soundtoys 5, Valhalla reverbs, Waves SSL, iZotope Ozone Advanced, and Slate Digital VMR for precise tone shaping and mastering. Whether I’m polishing a single vocal or building a dense stereo image, my workflow is dialed in for fast turnarounds without compromising on quality. It’s a space built for both technical precision and creative flow.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: I draw inspiration from legends across both Indian and global music scenes. Icons like SP Balasubrahmanyam, RD Burman, and AR Rahman have shaped my appreciation for melody, cinematic soundscapes, and cultural depth. From the Western world, I’m deeply influenced by the sonic mastery of Rick Rubin, the genre-defying creativity of Kanye West, and the precision and polish of Mike Dean and Manny Marroquin. I also admire Finneas for his minimal yet emotionally rich productions, and Pharrell Williams for always pushing boundaries in rhythm and tone. These artists inspire me to bridge technical excellence with emotional storytelling in every mix.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: As a mixing and mastering engineer, I specialize in transforming raw multi-tracks into polished, radio-ready records. I focus on enhancing vocal presence, balancing dynamics, tightening low-end, and creating spatial depth that translates across all platforms. Most of my clients come to me for a modern, competitive sound that maintains the emotional integrity of their music—whether it’s indie, hip-hop, or electronic. I also provide creative mix feedback and technical guidance when needed, making the process collaborative and smooth.
