Me: Drums that groove, hit, and serve the song. I blend Afro-Cuban roots, NYC grit, and Berlin’s creative chaos to lay down parts that feel right. No templates - just musicality, vibe, and pro sound.

I’m a Berlin-based session drummer and percussionist with over a decade of experience in both live and studio settings. From jazz, funk, soul, and rock to Afro-Cuban, Brazilian, and cinematic styles, I bring musical range, strong groove, and a collaborative spirit to every project.

I’ve toured internationally with Faraj Suleiman, recorded for Deutschrap artist T-Low at TRIXX Studios, and have become a go-to drummer in Berlin’s music scene - for both live performances and studio sessions.
People often turn to me for anything from classic session work - laying down a tight, musical groove - to more modern, textured drum production that blends acoustic and percussive elements in creative ways.

I’m comfortable reading sheet music, lead sheets, or custom parts, and equally enjoy working more intuitively when the music calls for it. I care about sound, feel, and finding that rhythmic approach that quietly elevates a song without stepping on it.

I record remotely using pro kits (Ludwig Maple Fab, Gretsch Brooklyn), Istanbul Agop cymbals, SDs including Black Beauty and Supraphonic, and a range of mics(Vanguard V13 tubes, M160 ribbon, Neumann) through 1073-style Avedis MA5 preamps.
Sessions are tracked in Cubase Pro at 48kHz with 11–15 mics for a detailed, mix-ready sound.

Didn’t expect the level of professionalism David brought. He nailed it from the start, tight, on the grid, and still open to perfecting every detail. Musicians this reliable and dedicated are rare, so I’m lucky (and thankful) we crossed paths… and we even live in the same city! Don’t even doubt working with him...wow.

I had the pleasure of working with David for a contemporary dance piece. Not only was he super fun to collaborate with, but he captured the feeling of the dance work immediately and brought it to an even higher level with his music compositions than my dance partner and I could’ve imagined. He is extremely versatile and has a killer sense of humor. Seriously hope to work with him again. HIRE THIS GUY!!!!

I got to know David in Berlin and he is both an amazing musician and a wonderful, warm person. He really understands music, he is attentive, he is utmost professional, and all around just a real pleasure to work with. He also possesses the rare dual skills of being a world-class drummer with a great feel, and a truly gifted sound engineer. His contributions to the tracks we worked on together were musically fantastic, but the sound and recording quality was exactly right for the vibe as well. David is a true gem, and ideally I´d like to keep him just for myself!

I got to work with David on the recording of a couple of singles. He was professional and even recommended a bassist for the recording session. We had a practice session in his studio to work out the details of the songs. On the day of the recording, he was very happy to chip in and help out. His positive attitude is something I was particularly appreciative about. I would 100% work with David again.

As a bass player/producer who’s been working with him in different projects over the last couple of years I can truly tell that this fine man is literally always fun to work with and a funky-as-hell-and-always-serving-the-music kinda drummer.

He got a damn good understanding of music in all different styles, topped by his own approach. One of the very special kind of people who blend great musicianship together with a beautiful personality and ears sharpened musically as well as socially.

absolutly crazy professional. i was producing a track and first just wanted it to have a demo vibe so we recorded it without a klick.. time passed by and the whole thing build up to the point where it desperately needed drums.. we where afraid that you could hear that it was recorded without a klick when u add drums but David absolutely killed it.. he managed to create the perfect exact sound and his feel for the details is beyond.. had an incredible time working with him huuuuge recommendation!!!

I have used David to engineer a fusion trio band. He was playing the drums and engineering the session. He was incredibly great to work with, recording incredibly sounding drums - in his playing and his recording technique (plus a great sounding kit). I am very happy from working with David and will send him future tracks to drum over or bring my project in to him again.

Interview with David Guy

  1. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  2. A: I work primarily in digital because it allows for speed, precision, and flexibility, which keeps projects moving efficiently. But I still embrace and apply the analog-era mindset - focusing on capturing great performances from the start, minimizing unnecessary edits, and keeping that live, human feel intact. For me, the best results come from blending modern tools with timeless recording values.

  3. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  4. A: I promise to bring tight, expressive, and musically supportive rhythm to every track. That means locking in with the groove, respecting the artist’s vision, and adding energy without overcomplicating the arrangement. I aim to make the recording process smooth, collaborative, and fun, so the final track feels alive and truly serves the song.

  5. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  6. A: What I love most is helping songs come to life with the right feel and groove. Being part of someone’s creative process, adding energy and nuance that elevates the track, and seeing a session transform into a finished piece that resonates with listeners-it’s incredibly rewarding. Every session is different, and that variety keeps me inspired and always learning.

  7. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  8. A: 1. “How do you adapt to different styles or feels?” I answer that I study the song’s mood, the references, and the nuances of the style, then apply the right touch, dynamics, and groove to make it feel natural and authentic. 2. “How many takes do we really need?” I tell them that I aim to capture the best feel quickly, usually in just a few takes, and focus on getting musical choices right from the start so we can spend more time refining instead of repeating.

  9. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  10. A: The biggest misconception is that humans can play “on the grid.” They can’t - and that’s a good thing. It might sound like it's on the grid, but if you zoom enough - it won't be. The subtle imperfections are exactly what make music feel alive. Great drummers make those imperfections consistent, creating a groove that feels natural, precise, and musical—it’s that balance that’s music to my ears. My work-ethic is to aspire and do everything you can to reach perfection and then.. the human element will shine through in its own by, all by itself.

  11. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  12. A: I usually start by asking about the song’s vibe and reference tracks, the role the drums should play, and any specific feels or grooves they have in mind. I also ask about deadlines, workflow preferences, and whether they want a polished, edited take or a more live, human feel. These questions help me deliver a performance that’s musical, efficient, and perfectly tailored to the song.

  13. Q: How would you describe your style?

  14. A: I’m trained in the tradition of classic 80s/90s session drummers—think Steve Gadd, J.R. Robinson, Manu Katché—so I focus on versatility, solid technique, reading sheet music, and playing by ear. That foundation lets me adapt to almost any song or style. At the same time, I’m inspired by modern music and production, from minimalist grooves to creative sonic approaches. My goal is always to serve the song first and bring something that feels right, not flashy.

  15. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  16. A: I’d say my strongest skill is working with people. I’m known for locking into a groove quickly, keeping sessions efficient, and getting exactly what the song needs in just a few takes. My focus is always on making the process smooth and the track feel good!

  17. Q: What's your typical work process?

  18. A: I start by listening closely to the song and any reference tracks to understand the vibe, dynamics, and groove. From there, I focus on getting solid takes quickly, prioritizing feel and musicality over perfection. I like to keep communication open throughout the session, making sure my playing serves the song and matches the artist’s vision. Once we have the core takes, I’ll add small variations, fills, or nuances as needed to enhance the track while keeping it natural and cohesive.

  19. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  20. A: I record exclusively on acoustic drums, with a mix of classic and modern kits-including a Ludwig Classic Maple (22", 13", 16") and a Gretsch Brooklyn (18", 12", 14"), plus some vintage and oddball drums. My snares include a Black Beauty, Supraphonic, Gretsch wood, and piccolo snare, paired with Istanbul Agop Traditional and 30th Anniversary cymbals. For mics, I use Vanguard V13 tube condensers on overheads, a Neumann TLM 102 and Shure Beta 52A on kick (plus a DIY subkick!), 57s on snare, MD421 and M88 on toms, a Telefunken knee mic, a Beyer M160 ribbon on hi-hat, and matched Oktava condensers for the room. I also have a stereo pair set up in a storage room next door, creating a unique echo chamber that adds a distinct spatial character when needed. All preamps and recording gear are chosen for clarity and musicality - Avedis MA5 and clean Focusrite pres feeding Cubase 13 Pro, with UAD, Soundtoys, Valhalla, and XLN Audio plugins for mixing and subtle enhancement. The setup is designed to capture a natural, dynamic drum sound that sits beautifully in the mix while keeping sessions efficient and musical.

  21. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  22. A: Most of my work involves recording live drum tracks for songs across a variety of styles, from pop and rock to R&B and modern production-focused music.
