Interview with Maga Martinho
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I worked on live show performances in some big arenas as Monitor Engineer for musicians. We often struggle with background noise, bleed, and unpredictable elements, so working on live shows highlights my skills in cleaning and polishing tough material.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I am mixing live shows I recorded.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Not yet
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: I commonly use digital tools for my day to day work (in my home studio and in live shows). I get the beauty in Analog and I use it every time I can, but I get the most of my digital tools.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I promise to treat your audio with care and attention to detail, delivering clean, polished sound that respects the original performance.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: What I enjoy most is helping people bring their ideas to life and help them reach other people with their creative work.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Can you make this sound professional even though it was recorded badly? Yes — to a point. I use tools like iZotope RX and surgical editing techniques to reduce background noise, remove clicks, improve clarity, and tighten pacing. But if the source is very poor (e.g., phone mic in a noisy room), I’ll do my best to improve it, and I’ll always be honest about what’s realistically possible. What do I need to send you to get started? Just send me the raw audio files (WAV or high-quality MP3), a short description of what you want done, and any references you have. I’ll take care of the rest — and I’ll check in with any questions to make sure we’re aligned.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That it’s quick and automatic.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What’s the goal or final use of the audio? Do you have any reference tracks or examples of the sound you want? Are there specific edits you already know you want (ums, breaths, silences, etc.)? What’s your ideal turnaround time? What format(s) do you need the final audio delivered in?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Look for someone who understands both the creative and technical side.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Headphones, Computer, Audio Interface, SM58 and my guitar.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I´ve been working in this for 10 years. First in recording studios and then I became a Monitor and P.A. Engineer in live shows.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My style is clean, natural, and focused on preserving the character of the original performance.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I am a big Lady Gaga and Dave Grohl fan :)
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: I try not to over-process and get the best of the material which I am working in.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I work mostly with rock and indie bands.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: I am very good at editing fast and I am always trying to get the best results. I also pay close attention to detail.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring out the best in a performance (tightening rhythm, cleaning up timing, and enhancing vocals)
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: - First I review and organize my Pro Tool´s session (I have my own templates). - Edit for flow and timing — removing filler words, silences, background noise, and distractions while keeping things natural. - Apply cleanup and enhancement tools like EQ, de-essing, noise reduction (iZotope RX), and leveling for balanced loudness. - Mix and export WAV/MP3 files and check the in different audio devices to measure good quality reproduction.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I have an Scarlett 2i2, Custom Made In Ears, also Audio Technica MX30 Headphones and Mackie Monitors.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I love grunge music, I play guitar also, I love producers as Butch Vig and Steve Albini.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: My work includes cutting filler words and silences, removing background noise, tightening pacing, enhancing vocal clarity, and mixing for consistent loudness. I work with musical performances (live and studio) and also editing podcasts content (dialogues and music).
