Interview with Theotis
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I’m especially proud of working on the music that was featured on P-Valley (2020 season). My role was mixing and mastering the tracks, ensuring each song sounded polished, balanced, and ready for television broadcast. It was a rewarding experience because the project reached a wide audience, and I was able to contribute directly to the professional quality and impact of the music.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: At the moment, I’m working on a project with Jacquie Belle, providing mixing and mastering services for her upcoming songs. I’m focused on bringing out the best in her music and ensuring each track is polished, balanced, and ready for release.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: At this time, I don’t personally know anyone on SoundBetter to specifically recommend. My focus is on providing high-quality, professional service directly to my clients, ensuring they receive expert mixing, mastering, and music consultation tailored to their projects.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: I prefer digital production because it offers unmatched flexibility, precision, and creative possibilities. With digital tools, I can experiment, edit, and perfect every element of a track without limitations, allowing for faster revisions, detailed automation, and the ability to push creative boundaries. While analog has its charm, digital gives me the control and versatility needed to deliver modern, polished, radio-ready results.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: My promise to my clients is to deliver high-quality, polished, and professional music that brings out the best in their work. I commit to clear communication, attention to detail, and ensuring that every mix, master, and consultation reflects their artistic vision while meeting industry standards.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: What I love most about my job is bringing an artist’s vision to life. There’s nothing more rewarding than taking a song and helping it reach its full potential through mixing, mastering, and music consultation. I enjoy the creative process, solving sonic challenges, and knowing that the final track will connect with listeners and make an impact.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: The questions I most commonly receive from clients usually focus on the process, turnaround time, and results. Some examples include: How long will it take to mix and master my track? Can you help me get radio or playlist placements? Will my song sound professional and ready for release? How many revisions are included? Do you offer advice on arrangement, songwriting, or overall sound? I make sure to answer these clearly and provide guidance so clients feel confident and informed throughout the project.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: The biggest misconception about what I do is that anyone can mix and master a song. In reality, professional mixing and mastering requires a deep understanding of sound design, frequency balance, dynamics, and the technical nuances that make a track sound polished on all playback systems. It’s not just about making things louder—it’s about bringing clarity, emotion, and impact to the music while respecting the artist’s vision.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What is the overall style or genre of the track? What feeling or emotion do you want the song to convey? Are there any reference tracks or sounds you want me to emulate? What is your target audience or platform for release? Do you have any specific elements or parts of the mix you want emphasized or adjusted?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: My advice for anyone looking to hire a provider like me is to clearly communicate your vision and goals for the project. Choose someone who not only has technical skill in mixing, mastering, and production, but also takes the time to understand your artistic style. Collaboration, feedback, and open communication are key to achieving a polished, professional, and impactful final product.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Laptop with Logic Pro & Pro Tools – for recording, mixing, and producing anywhere. Audio Interface – to ensure high-quality sound capture and playback. Studio Monitors – for accurate mixing and mastering. Quality Headphones – for detailed listening and reference. MIDI Controller/Keyboard – to create melodies, beats, and arrangements on the go.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I started my career in 1993 as a DJ, building a strong foundation in music performance and sound. Over the years, I expanded into mixing, mastering, songwriting, and music consultation, working with a variety of artists and genres. In 2020, I achieved a notable placement on P-Valley, among other projects, which helped solidify my career in professional music production. I’ve been actively involved in the music industry for over 30 years, bringing experience, technical skill, and creative insight to every project I work on.

Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: .I would love to work with artists who push creative boundaries and have a strong vision, such as Kendrick Lamar, Travis Scott, or Flume. Collaborating with artists like these would allow me to contribute my expertise in mixing, mastering, and music consultation to help bring their innovative ideas to life while ensuring the music reaches its full potential.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: One key music production tip I always share is to focus on balance and clarity in your mix before adding effects. This holistic approach ensures that each project is both creatively strong and commercially ready.

Q: What's your typical work process?

I start by organizing and cleaning the session, then move into detailed mixing—balancing levels, applying EQ, compression, effects, and shaping the overall sound. Once the mix is approved, I move on to mastering, where I enhance loudness, clarity, and tonal balance to ensure the track is radio-ready. Throughout the process, I maintain clear communication with the client to make sure the final product matches their vision.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My studio is equipped with a professional digital audio workstation setup featuring Logic Pro, Pro Tools, and other industry-standard production software. A: I’m inspired by legendary producers and DJs such as DJ Magic Mike, DJ Fury, and many others who have shaped the sound of modern music. Their creativity, technical skill, and influence on the industry continue to motivate my own approach to mixing, mastering, and music production.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: e most common type of work I provide for clients is professional mixing and mastering. This includes balancing and enhancing individual tracks, applying EQ, compression, and other effects, and preparing a polished, radio-ready final master that meets industry standards.
