Blain Crawford on SoundBetter

As a bassist and engineer, I have had the privilege to work with artists of countless genres and always seek to humbly and deftly raise a song to sound greater than the sum of its parts.

I am a seasoned and dedicated musician who has had the privilege to perform, record, and play with artists of many styles and approaches. I am also a first call player for several Wedding and Corporate bands on the East Coast. This means, I have a deep understanding of the artistic side of music, but also seek to approach work the work I do for others with the insight and humility of a well seasoned tradesman.

Whether I am working as a bassist, an engineer, a producer, or a composer, I always seek to use the tools at hand to elevate the piece of music I am working on to highest standards of the artist or composed with which I am working.

- I work quickly and have a turnaround time of 2 to 3 days

- I will always approach the music entrusted to me with the idea of complimenting and elevating the vision

- I am versed an more than enough music to be able to adjust my approach with any feedback

Interview with Blain Crawford

  1. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  2. A: As of writing this, I am currently working on writing songs for a new record with my jazz fusion band City of Four. In the coming months, I will be working on composing more of my own music. I have also recently started working as an Audio Engineer at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston, MA.

  3. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  4. A: Never think of any part in isolation. Always work, whether as an individual player, and engineer, a producer, or any other role to treat each song as a whole and work to best represent and exemplify it for the qualities that make it unique. Celebrating and uplifting those aspects of a song can make any recording great.

  5. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  6. A: As a player and engineer with a wide range of experience, I am open to all styles of music. However, lately I have been getting called for mostly funk, jazz, rock, hip hop, pop, and soul music.

  7. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  8. A: My ability to collaborate, communicate, receive feedback and respond quickly and consistently has always been my greatest asset as a musician and an artist.

  9. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  10. A: To every song I get the chance to put my ears on, I bring a wealth of knowledge from a history of playing, engineering, and composing many different genres of music. I also bring the humility and restraint to work in the way that elevates the song and not my individual part or role in isolation.

  11. Q: What's your typical work process?

  12. A: It depends on what work I am doing. As a player, I sit with the song once or twice, make note of the harmonic and melodic moments that make the song unique and then compose and record a part that best supports and exemplifies those moments. As an engineer, I sit with each instrument, where it stands in the frequency spectrum of a composition and where it can be best placed to support the composition while remaining singularly unique and elevating each part to an outcome that is greater than the sum of its parts.

  13. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  14. A: My personal studio setup has a variety of great gear. I have a set of JBL LSR2328P's, Yamaha HS-10s, a fully loaded mac with Pro-tools, and Logic, a few options for keyboards, midi controllers, guitars and basses of all kinds, as well as a Focusrite Scarlet interface. I also have a variety of bass amps from Aguilar, to TC Electronics, to Bergantino, as well as a Quad Cortex that offer a huge tonal range for any bass or guitar recording requests.

  15. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  16. A: I'm greatly inspired by not only my heroes who have come before me, but by the incredibly talented community I have the privilege of being a part of. From bassist producer Raphael Saadiq, to Quincy Jones, to bassists like Victor Bailey, Jaco Pastorius, Pino Palladino, to mixing engineers from jazz greats like Dave Darlington to rock legends like Chris Lord-Alge, I find myself infinitely inspired by a wide range of musical heroes. Living in and around the Boston area, I also have the privilege to work with and perform with a host of musicians along the East Coast that keep me humbled, growing, and always creatively inspired.

  17. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  18. A: I record remote bass parts, or guitar parts most often. I also do editing, and mix engineering for clients of all genres.
