Chris Cho on SoundBetter

Hi, I'm Chris Cho — a mixing and mastering engineer with over 20 years of experience. I've contributed to numerous commercial albums and music projects across diverse genres, collaborating with artists and producers worldwide. My focus is on delivering warm, balanced, and emotionally engaging mixes that reveal the true essence of every song.

With over two decades in music production, I’ve worked on numerous commercial releases, spanning from pop, rock, jazz, latin and cinematic genres.
My background includes collaborations with international artists, production houses, and independent creators, always aiming for a mix that feels alive and emotionally authentic.

I believe great mixes are about balance — clarity without harshness, depth without muddiness, and emotion that connects.
Whether it’s a major label project or an indie track, I treat every mix with the same precision and care to make it sound timeless and powerful on every platform.

Interview with Chris Cho

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: There was an acoustic song tuned to 432 Hz that I tracked and mixed which had a deep, resonant vibe. It felt slightly different from the standard 440 Hz tracks. It was featured throughout a Netflix series, and every time a scene of past memories appeared, the song would play and blend beautifully with the story’s emotion.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I’m currently working on a mix and master project for an indie pop artist, and a soundtrack mix for a web drama series. Both projects focus on creating depth and emotional connection through sound which is always fun.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: There are so many talented people on SoundBetter. I’d always recommend collaborating with vocal producers, instrumentalists, and mastering engineers who share the same passion for detail and musicality. Teamwork always elevates the music.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Both. Grew up loving the depth and rich saturation of analog gear, but I also appreciate the precision and flexibility of digital tools. They are all tools to serve the emotion of the song.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: I promise to treat every song with care, honesty, and musical sensitivity. I’ll listen deeply, communicate clearly, and deliver mixes that not only sound great but also feel right.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: I love the moment when the mix finally clicks when everything falls into place and the emotion of the song becomes clear. When I reach that point, I feel so connected and focused that the rest of the process feels almost like autopilot. It means a lot when artists are moved by their own songs and take a moment to thank me that’s when I know I’ve done my job right.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: Most clients ask about how I achieve such punchy and defined mixes. For me, it’s not about chasing tones — it’s about connecting with the song and understanding the artist’s vision. Once I feel where the music wants to go, the mix becomes a natural extension of that emotion and the bigger picture of the song.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: That mixing and mastering are just about making things sound good and louder. In reality, its a performance telling a story — enhancing the emotion, space, and flow of a song so it resonates with the listener.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: I usually ask about the artist’s goals for the track, reference songs they love, and what emotions they want listeners to feel. Understanding that helps me make mix decisions that truly serve the song and the artist’s story.

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Look for someone who listens — not just to your mix, but to your vision. I feel the best results come from open communication and understanding the emotion behind the song, not just the technical specs.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: Black Lion Audio interface, Shure SM57, Sony MDR-7506, my Mac, and my guitar. That’s all I’d need to stay creative and connected to the music.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I’ve been in the music and audio industry for over 20 years. From a very young age, I started with violin and played in an orchestra before transitioning into guitar and modern band music. That journey naturally led me to producing, and later, to mixing and mastering. My background in both classical and contemporary music has given me a deep understanding of dynamics, emotion, and balance all of which shape how I approach every mix today.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: Warm, balanced, and cinematic. My mixes are detailed and modern but still feel human and I aim to create soundscapes that pull listeners in emotionally while maintaining clarity and depth across all playback systems.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: There are so many artists I’d love to collaborate with, but Colbie Caillat and James Bay comes to my mind at the moment. Their organic, yet creative emotional sound aligns perfectly with my approach and I’m confident I could do a good job of bringing extra depth and clarity to their music while keeping its natural warmth.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Always check your mix against references on monitors you know well. Switch between mono and stereo — if the mix still moves you in mono, you’ve nailed the balance and emotion.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: I mostly work on pop, folk, jazz, cinematic, indie, and rock music from commercial releases to film and web drama soundtracks. I enjoy crossing genres to bring out each artist’s identity while maintaining a polished, professional sound.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: Translating emotion into sound that is performing. I have a strong sense of balance between technical precision and musical feel delivering mixes that are clean, warm, and emotionally impactful without losing their natural energy.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I bring clarity, depth, and musical storytelling that feels like a performance. My focus is not just on technical perfection but on helping the song connect with listeners. I aim to make every mix sound cinematic, balanced, and timeless something that translates beautifully across every platform and emotion.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: Every project starts with understanding the artist’s vision. I listen carefully to the rough mix and references, then build a sonic foundation that highlights the emotional core of the song. I make sure to communicate clearly during each stage from first mix draft to final master so the artist feels fully involved and confident in the result.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: My studio is designed for accuracy and warmth. I work with a combination of high-end analog and digital tools — including Neve 1073 preamps, Black Lion converters, and Neumann microphones — vintage Yamaha NS10m, Audeze LCD-X's mainly for monitoring, alongside Pro Tools and Logic Pro for detailed mixing and mastering. The room is acoustically treated for a natural translation across different listening environments.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: I’ve been hugely influenced by Michael Brauer — his approach to feeling music and mixing like a performance really shaped my perspective. I also draw inspiration from legends like Tchad Blake, Al Schmitt, and Chris Lord-Alge, whose musicality and technical mastery continue to push me forward.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: I mainly provide mixing and mastering services for commercial releases, film and web drama OSTs, and independent artist projects. I always try to make the track feel alive, dynamic, balanced, and emotionally engaging across all playback systems.
