Corey Chang

Composer & Arranger

Corey Chang on SoundBetter

National awards from ASCAP and the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Juilliard-trained, with music performed at Carnegie Hall and internationally. I have lots of experience composing for various ensembles and genres as well as multimedia productions. What's your artistic vision? I'd love to help bring it to life!

Offerings:

Composition for concert halls (solo, chamber, large ensemble)
Composition for film
Composition for voice
Arrangements of songs and works for multiple genres

I write original music for concert venues and multimedia productions. I've worked with dancers and film makers and have had multiple of my works choreographed. In addition, I work with electronic media as well, using DAWs and software such as MaxMSP and Kyma in my work.

When I write music, I view the process as a collaborative effort between myself and the artists bringing my work to life. I enjoy not only creating the music itself, but integrating my work into a larger purpose that performers and audiences alike can connect with.

I also work as an arranger and am currently partnered with Good Beats, an organization based in Washington DC that organizes community events at fundraisers, hospitals, schools, and nursing homes, connecting classical music with pop, hip-hop, film, and game music for wide audiences.

Interview with Corey Chang

  1. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  2. A: Working on various arrangements for Good Beats and a new work for piano and electronics for an Astral Artist pianist.

  3. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  4. A: Whoever gets the job done :)

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: Digital - sorry, I'm a guy who keeps with the times I guess!

  7. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  8. A: I'll make sure we enjoy the time collaborating and end with a proud product!

  9. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  10. A: What's not to like? I get to do what I love every day! I count my lucky blessings to be able to say that.

  11. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  12. A: That composers are antisocial. Don't get me wrong, I'm introverted, but I LOVE working with people.

  13. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  14. A: The first five things I see on my desk.

  15. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  16. A: My career path has led to being a freelance composer, but truth be told, I consider myself an artist above all else. As cheesy as that sounds, I prefer not to "box" myself in by my experiences and to instead define myself by what I want to do in the present and future.

  17. Q: How would you describe your style?

  18. A: A mix between fun and introspective.

  19. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  20. A: Jacob Collier - he seems like a cool guy.

  21. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  22. A: Speed without sacrificing quality - it's possible.

  23. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  24. A: In the past, classical, but I have been branching off into more styles and industries.

  25. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  26. A: I trust my ear more than anything. No matter how much I wrote and studied in conservatories, there's nothing like good ol' playing by ear.

  27. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  28. A: I bring my heart 100%.

  29. Q: What's your typical work process?

  30. A: Sit...think...sketch...write...revise...repeat!

  31. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  32. A: I work with a laptop, monitor, and small MIDI keyboard in one room and a large MIDI keyboard, Scarlett Interface, and microphones in another!

  33. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  34. A: Many! Old Classical: Beethoven, Schubert, Stravinsky, and Bartok. 21st Century Classical: Joan Tower, Ned Rorem, Oliver Knussen. Other Genres: Tigran Hamasyan, Michael Jackson, John Coltrane, Brad Mehldau, Joyner Lucas, Whitney Houston, Hirome Uehara

  35. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  36. A: My clients most often commission me for new original works. I like to work in all genres of music, so I'm happy to build my work incorporating my client's vision.
