Victor Gourgeaud

Session Bass Player

Victor Gourgeaud on SoundBetter

Professional session bass player for over ten years. I record from a high quality studio with a wide selection of basses and synthesizers available.

I grew up in a family of musicians and discovered the electric bass at a very early age, which I then fully dedicated myself to.

My first professional experiences began during my teenage years. This early immersion quickly opened doors for me to different musical worlds. I was admitted to the CMDL and to the Royal Conservatory of Brussels right after I finished high school. Fascinated by the polyrhythmic language of Steve Coleman and especially of Aka Moon, I chose Brussels to study with Michel Hatzigeorgiou and Benoît Vanderstraeten.

I quickly decided to pursue a less formal path by attending jam sessions and by meeting with educators as well as musicians from diverse backgrounds. This decision allowed me to develop great versatility by discovering different musical sensibilities and by improving my skills among numerous artists. I thus navigate between world music (Oliv Poulot, Majnun & The Black-Magic Sofas Sofas, Tamia Ramos), pop music (Gerardi, Upseen, Diane Cluster Diane), soul music (Manne Jonnes, Sol, Home Cookin'), jazz (Laurent Desmurs, Salim Bekraoui, K-UBIK), rock music (Pompei, Outwards), orchestral music (Symphonic Orchestra of Orleans, Projekt Big Band), urban music (Trublion, Diffmen) and contemporary music ( New Art & Music Ensemble Salzburg)... I also sometimes worked as a keyboardist and synths programmer in various projects such as Soul Kaiju.

Interview with Victor Gourgeaud

  1. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  2. A: Discovering new music and creating by meeting people.

  3. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  4. A: I play music since forever, coming from a family of musicians. I started playing bass at 13 and became a professional musician during high school.

  5. Q: How would you describe your style?

  6. A: Precise and meticulous.

  7. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  8. A: Ed Motta, for his sound and harmonies.

  9. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  10. A: Simplifying is (almost) always the best way to go.

  11. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  12. A: A bit of everything, I played a lot of jazz but also worked for many pop/soul/funk artists and more... I have also been playing a lot of folk music for quite a few years now.

  13. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  14. A: I am versatile, I can offer some very simple and refined bass lines as well as more technical ones, but still solid and tight.

  15. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  16. A: I always aim at serving the music by finding the right sound and line that will enhance the tune.

  17. Q: What's your typical work process?

  18. A: It depends on the request - if a score has already been written and the customer expects me to play it to the exact note, or if there's only a draft that I'm asked to arrange, or even if I have to write my own bass line. It also depends on the degree of progress of the song I would have to work on, and notably if the drums part has already been recorded and edited beforehand. I generally give my clients several sounds and playing styles which they can choose from before I record a first version.

  19. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  20. A: I am used to recording through my A-Designs REDDI tube direct box. I have several preamps available (Neve 1073, SSL 500-Series...) as well as several basses so I can respond to any request. My audio interface is a RME Fireface UFX III. I also have many hardware synths such as Korg MS-20, Korg Trident, Novation Bass Station II, Prophet Take 5,...

  21. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  22. A: I mostly like session musicians, arrangers or producers/sound engineers. I've listened to Toby Smith a lot, as well as Brian Eno, Sylvain Daniel, Vincent Taeger...

  23. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  24. A: Professional arrangement/composition/recording of a bass line with a wide selection of gear for optimal sound perfectly suited to the music.
