Interview with Sunni Smilez
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I vocal produced an entire Rnb Ep for another artist start to finish. Grateful that she trusted me to work on every record, arranging her vocals and giving my creative input.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Rock Ep and Rnb Ep
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I will 1000% return it back to you after giving it my all and following your creative vision.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: It’s always been my passion since the 2nd grade. I like that so many years later I love it even more, and I get to share my gift in so many different ways.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Microphone, Mac book, charger, headphones, interface….
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I started as an artist. I’ve been writing for and training other artists for the last 8 years.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My style changes. I don’t have a set style. I create freely which allows me to write to anything for anyone. My music taste is a melting pot so when I create my creations are a melting pot but in the best way.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I definitely have a full list but I would love to work with Beyonce because I know I could learn a lot from her on an artist level, from set design, to vocal production, to tour planning, to merging genres and crossing over the list goes on. She has mastered sooooo many different levels, and being a sponge in her world… soaking up knowledge would be a dream.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: My tip would be: BE OPEN TO TRY NEW THINGS UNTIL YOU FIND YOUR SOUND.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Pop, Rnb, Soul, and gospel are some of my favs and popular genres I get hired to work on with other artists.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Definitely a tie between singing, writing, and arranging.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I can write about ANYTHING, and I can write to ANYTHING. No topic or genre is off the table. My melodies and harmonies, and just overall arrangement and word play breath life into EVERY SONG. I paint a picture with my lyrics. I can be playful and fun or I can be serious it all depends on the project and goal.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Every project is different. If I’m writing a song for example, an artist can give me just a topic and I can write an entire song for them. If they have some lyrics already I can expand on what they have and finish what’s missing. If they have all the lyrics but no melody I’ll create the melody and make it a song. Whatever the artist is missing I will fill in the blanks.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I have a few studios in Philadelphia that I work out of to record my own music, demo work for other artists, and vocal produce my clients. Top of the line equipment.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Beyonce, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Christina A., Celine, Summer Walker, Adele, Ariana Grande,Victoria Monet, Katseye, Lauren Hill, Timbaland, Jazze Pha, Pharrell, so many different pop, Rnb, rock, and soul artists, writers, and producers have inspired me. This is just a few.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Vocal Lessons, Songwriting, Vocal Production/ Vocal Arrangements, and Artist Development are the top services that I’ve been providing for the last 8 years.
