Interview with Nate Castillo
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I am working on a passion album (which you can hear a track from on my profile). The goal is to make a short film based on the album.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Digital is the future, but analog will always have a place in my heart.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I promise to deliver the best work I can, and make their songs complete.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I get to do what I love and get paid. This is everyone's dream.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: My customers always ask "why do I need to master", and I usually answer with a high level response. Mastering is what makes a song enjoyable for everyone.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That my job can be done from a computer. I mix and master in every environment I can. This ensures that the song is as close to perfect as possible for everyday listening.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: The most important question I ask has to do with timelines. If a client has a tight deadline, I want to make sure I can accommodate.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Have a vision in mind! Where do you want to hear your track, and who is your target audience.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: A generator, monitors, a midi controller, my laptop, and a hard drive full of samples.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I have been in the music world since I was 5 years old. I come from a musical family, so it's in my DNA. My day job is a regular 9-5 bank job, but music is my passion.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I am a perfectionist, which is why I dont use my own vocals lol.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I would love to work with Damso because his tracks are very cinematic and I have been a fan for years.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Dont overthink it! Your gut is rarely wrong, so follow it whenever you can.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I usually work on pop latino, urbano, reggaeton, afro beat, and some hip hop.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My ability to make any track sound good in any environment.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring a classically trained ear which is key for any track to sound complete.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I want the client to be involved as much as possible during the process. I am huge on communication and transparency.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I have two KRK Rokit 8 monitors, countless controllers, a full apple set up, several DAWs (main one being Logic), and a tuxedo cat named Sylvester.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I am heavily inspired by many pop latino and urbano latino producers.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I usually mix/master my client's tracks. I am a perfectionist who wants each track to sound as close to perfect as possible in every environment.
