Interview with Mike Fly

  1. Q: How would you describe your style?

  2. A: I’d describe my style as vintage folk/pop-rock with soul, melodic and emotive, sometimes exploring blues, hip-hop, or heavier rock elements depending on the project.

  3. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  4. A: 100% Jack Johnson. I admire his songwriting, universe, and message, and he’s just so cool — it’s a no-brainer for me.

  5. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  6. A: My tip is simple: finish your work. Many amateur producers start lots of tracks but never complete them because they’re never fully satisfied. Completing at least one track helps you unlock the creative process and learn what works.

  7. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  8. A: I mainly work on folk and pop-rock music, but I also explore soul, hip-hop, heavier rock, and blues, depending on the project. This allows me to bring varied influences and fresh ideas into every track I produce.

  9. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  10. A: My strongest skill is songwriting. I have a knack for quickly capturing a feeling or emotion with an instant melody and turning it into a full, compelling song.

  11. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  12. A: I bring emotion, authenticity, and my personal touch to every song. Beyond composition, arrangement, and mixing, my work reflects a distinct sound — shaped by my voice, playing style, recording approach, and creative choices. I can also contribute deep, poetic lyrics when needed, creating tracks that are warm, melodic, and emotionally engaging.

  13. Q: What's your typical work process?

  14. A: My typical workflow starts with a reference track, usually acoustic guitar and vocals, to establish the song’s vibe. I then build the arrangement track by track, starting with drums, then bass, guitars, effects, and finally vocals, depending on the song. Once the arrangement is in place, I focus on mixing, carefully adding effects to each track to preserve clarity and emotion. I finish with mastering, keeping the sound warm, vintage, and authentic, avoiding over-production.

  15. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  16. A: I work from a home studio setup including an audio interface and DAW, a set of guitars (electric, acoustic, bass), and microphones for vocals and acoustic instruments. I also use programmed drums and effects to complement recordings. This setup allows me to produce vintage-inspired folk and pop-rock tracks, from composition to final mix, with warmth, clarity, and emotional impact.

  17. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  18. A: I’m inspired by artists who combine strong songwriting with emotional authenticity, like Ben Harper, Jack Johnson, John Mayer, Maggie Rogers, Noah Cyrus, and Julia Michaels. Their work motivates me to create vintage-inspired folk and pop-rock tracks that are heartfelt, melodic, and emotionally engaging.

  19. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  20. A: I create vintage-leaning folk and pop-rock songs, from instrumental pieces to fully written vocal tracks. Clients usually hire me for composition, arrangement, sound selection and mixing, with an emphasis on authenticity, emotion and clarity rather than over-produced sounds. I also offer lyric writing for projects that need a strong narrative or emotional depth.

  • What I’m working on outside client projectsDec 23, 2025

Outside of client projects, I’m an active musician and songwriter in my band Mike on the Moon, available on all major streaming platforms.

After releasing Moon & Cadillacs in 2024, we’re working on a new LP with a more emotional, rock-oriented sound, focused on strong songwriting and deep arrangements. It helps refine my writing and production skills while offering a broader view of my music.
