Interview with Mark Boardman

Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: My band Lovejoy's new EP 'Second To One' as well as playing drums on every Lovejoy track, I also mixed Snake Oil & The Vows.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I'm in the process of recording & mixing an up and coming artist from London UK. They are a classic rock band with a powerful female lead singer.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Turn around time: 1-7 Business days. Drum ability: Passed Grade 8 drums and have been playing since i was 8 (i'm 26 now) I've toured the world since 2021 and played in front of tens of thousands of people.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I've been drumming for 18 years, Mixing for 10 and playing all over the world in my band Lovejoy.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Pop, Rock Metal, Acoustic, Electronic.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: In Mixing: weight, life & excitement so it jumps out the speakers. With Drumming: Energy & solid playing- I deliver all Mic stems as well as a "edited" folder that i've manually cleaned and, if needed, gated.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I work fast, getting a first mix done in a matter of hours. After a short "ear break" I revisit the song, testing across a wide range of speakers and listening devices before adjusting the mix to bring it up to a finished sound. I usually sleep on it, make any final adjustments and then deliver the finished mix back to the client.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Depending on what the song needs, I take inspiration from different Producers and Engineers from all genres as one size never fits all. For Rock & Heavy music I take inspiration from Adam "Nolly" Getgood & Chris Lord-Alge, as well as Rich Costey as I have worked along side him in the studio with my band Lovejoy. Softer genres like Pop & RnB I nod to Yoad Nevo and his "less can often mean more" approach.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Taking a song from a demo mix to a finished release-ready mix. I also have been playing drums for the last 18 years and am confident playing in a huge range of genres.
