Interview with Edris Wave
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: One project I’m particularly proud of is an original Afro-inspired release where I was involved in the songwriting and creative development. I focused on creating a strong concept, memorable melodies, and a cohesive sound that reflects my artistic identity while maintaining broad listener appeal.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I’m currently focused on developing original Afro-inspired music, writing and refining new songs, and producing material that combines authentic African influences with contemporary sounds. I’m also open to new collaborations and client projects.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: No, I don’t currently have anyone I know personally on SoundBetter to recommend.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: I prefer a digital workflow for its flexibility, precision, and efficiency. It allows me to experiment with ideas, refine arrangements, and collaborate easily while maintaining a professional and consistent sound.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: My promise is to deliver original, thoughtful, and high-quality songwriting that respects your vision. I commit to clear communication, professionalism, attention to detail, and meeting agreed deadlines.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: What I enjoy most is turning a simple idea into a complete song that connects with people. I love the creative process of developing melodies, lyrics, and concepts and bringing an artist’s vision to life.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Can you write in my style? Yes. I study your references and creative direction while keeping the songwriting original and authentic to your identity. How long does a song take? The timeline depends on the project, but I agree on a clear delivery date before starting. Can I request revisions? Yes. Reasonable revisions are included to ensure the final work matches the agreed creative direction. Do I get songwriting credits? Credits and songwriting splits are discussed and agreed upon before the final delivery.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: The biggest misconception is that songwriting is simply putting words together. Great songwriting requires understanding the artist, developing a strong concept, creating memorable melodies and hooks, and shaping the song to connect with listeners.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What is your creative vision for the song, and what sound, mood, message, or artists would you like it to be inspired by? Also, please share any references, lyrics, melodies, or ideas you already have.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Look for a songwriter who understands your vision, communicates clearly, and can adapt to your sound. Share your references and expectations upfront, and choose someone whose creative style genuinely fits your project.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: A laptop, acoustic guitar, quality studio headphones, a condenser microphone, and an audio interface. These essentials would allow me to write, record, and develop music anywhere inspiration strikes.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I began developing my passion for music at an early age and have continued to grow through songwriting, recording, and music production. Over the years, I’ve refined my craft by working on original music and exploring different African and contemporary sounds.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My style is authentic, melodic, and contemporary, rooted in African sounds with a strong focus on memorable melodies, expressive lyrics, and clean, modern songwriting. I aim to create music that feels distinctive and connects with a wide audience.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I’d love to work with Tems because of her distinctive artistry, powerful songwriting, and unique ability to blend African influences with a global sound. I believe our creative perspectives could produce something authentic and memorable.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Always prioritize the song over the production. Start with a strong melody, clear vocal, and compelling arrangement, then build the production around them. Every element should support the song, not compete with it.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I primarily work on Afro-inspired music, with a strong focus on Afrobeats and contemporary African sounds. I blend authentic African influences with modern songwriting, melodies, and production to create music with a distinctive and global appeal.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill is songwriting—turning ideas and emotions into memorable lyrics, melodies, and hooks that connect with listeners while staying true to the artist’s sound and vision.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring creativity, strong songwriting, memorable melodies, meaningful lyrics, and a clear understanding of how to shape a song around the artist’s identity. My goal is to create music that feels authentic, engaging, and memorable.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: My process begins with understanding the client’s vision, sound, and objectives. I develop the concept, write and refine lyrics and melodies, incorporate feedback, and deliver polished, original work within the agreed timeline.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My studio setup is optimized for professional songwriting, vocal recording, and music production. I work with a quality condenser microphone, audio interface, studio monitoring headphones, MIDI equipment, and a professional DAW-based workflow. My focus is on clean vocal capture, detailed songwriting, and polished production.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I’m inspired by Tems and Burna Boy for their unique artistry and global sound, while JAE5 inspires me as a producer through his innovative production and ability to blend African sounds with modern music.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I mainly write original lyrics and song concepts for artists, helping develop melodies, themes, hooks, and complete songs tailored to their sound and creative vision.
