Interview with Selim Rantapuro

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I am very proud of the music I make, all my three albums I have liked very much.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I work on my fourth album as a leader. As a sideman I have some ambitious projects with various singers. I work as a leader and a producer for those singers.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: I don't know any, yet

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Both, depending on the project. I like the character and natural feel that analog instruments, amplifiers, microphones, and pedals can bring, especially when recording guitars. At the same time, digital tools offer great flexibility for editing, arranging, mixing, and refining a production. I use both approaches and choose the tools that best serve the music rather than following one method exclusively. For me, the most important thing is the sound and the musical result, not whether something is analog or digital.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: My promise is to deliver work that you can be genuinely satisfied with. I will listen carefully to your vision, approach the project with professionalism and musicality, and make sure the final result serves the song. I want you to feel that the time and money you invested in the project were well spent, and that you received something you are genuinely happy with.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: To be creative

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: How quickly I can complete a project depends on its scope and the number of tracks involved. For a typical guitar recording, I can often deliver within a few days. If you have a specific deadline, just let me know when you contact me. I’ll confirm the timeline before starting and do my best to meet your deadline.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: I am actually a very versatile musician and capable of many things. I handle many genres and I also do good arrangements and transcriptions.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: It depends on the project. I usually ask about the main goal of the project, the musical direction, and what the client is looking for from me. I may also ask about reference tracks, the desired sound, the arrangement, deadlines, and any specific requirements for the recording or production. Most importantly, I want to understand the client’s vision before I start working, so I can make the right musical decisions for the project.

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Just ask — don’t be shy. If you have an idea, a reference track, or a specific sound in mind, feel free to reach out and discuss it with me. I’m happy to talk through the project, suggest ideas, and find an approach that works for your music and budget. Every project is different, so I’m open to discussing the scope and negotiating when appropriate.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: My Gibson J45, Gibson Johnny Smith and Ramirez 1a. All electricity is gone, right? ;)

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I have been a professional musician and music educator since 2015 with a master's degree in music.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: My style is rooted in jazz, improvisation, and a strong sense of melody, while drawing from blues, soul, funk, rock, and contemporary music. I tend to focus on expressive playing, strong melodic ideas, tasteful harmony, and a distinctive guitar sound. Whether I’m playing a supportive rhythm part, a melodic line, or a more prominent lead, I try to make every part serve the character of the song. I value musicality and individuality over playing for its own sake, and I enjoy adapting my sound and approach to the needs of each project.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: I like to work with singers from various genres, I have no specific artists.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Don’t try to fix everything with plugins. Start with the source: choose the right instrument, strings, amplifier, microphone, and playing approach before reaching for EQ or compression. A well-chosen guitar tone recorded at the source usually needs much less processing in the mix.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: I primarily work with jazz, jazz fusion, blues, soul, funk, pop, rock, and singer-songwriter music. My strongest background is in jazz and improvisation, but I regularly work across different styles and adapt my guitar playing, arranging, and production approach to the needs of each project. I’m particularly comfortable with music that values strong musicianship, expressive guitar playing, interesting harmony, melodic development, and organic instrumental sounds. I’m also open to working on projects outside these genres when the musical direction is a good fit.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: My strongest skill is creating musical and distinctive guitar parts that fit the character of a song. I have a strong sense of harmony, melody, rhythm, and tone, which allows me to move comfortably between supportive rhythm parts, melodic lines, improvisation, and more detailed guitar arrangements. My jazz background has developed my ability to listen closely, react musically, and find creative harmonic and melodic solutions. I combine this with a broad knowledge of guitar sounds and recording techniques to create parts that are both expressive and production-ready.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I bring a strong musical sense, an individual sound, and a focus on serving the song. I aim to create guitar parts that complement the composition rather than simply filling space, whether that means a subtle rhythmic texture, a melodic counterline, a memorable lead part, or a carefully chosen tone. My background in jazz and improvisation allows me to bring harmonic awareness, melodic creativity, and flexibility to different musical situations. At the same time, I pay close attention to the production, arrangement, dynamics, and overall character of the track. Most importantly, I want every part I play to have a clear musical purpose and make the song stronger.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: I start by listening carefully to the song and discussing the client’s goals, references, musical direction, and desired sound. I then work out the most appropriate guitar parts, arrangement, instrumentation, and tones for the project. For recording projects, I select the most suitable guitars, amplifiers, microphones, and effects from my setup and record multiple takes when needed. I edit and comp the best performances while keeping the playing natural and musical. I then make any necessary tonal or arrangement adjustments and deliver professionally edited, clearly organized tracks in the format requested by the client. For projects involving arranging, mixing, mastering, or transcription, I work closely with the client throughout the process and provide revisions when needed.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: I work from a dedicated home recording setup with a wide selection of professional instruments, microphones, amplifiers, effects, and outboard equipment. I have around 25 different microphones, giving me a wide range of options for recording guitars, amplifiers, vocals, and other instruments. My electric guitars include a Gibson Les Paul Custom, Fender Stratocaster, Gibson Johnny Smith, and Gibson ES-175. For acoustic and classical guitar, I have a Gibson J-45 and a Ramirez 1A. I also have a large selection of Boss pedals and other professional effects, as well as several high-end guitar amplifiers. My rack-based recording setup includes seven rack units: a Focusrite Scarlett 18i20, Focusrite OctoPre, Behringer DI800, Behringer PX3000, Furman X10, ART T8, and Behringer HA8000. I record and produce using Logic Pro and Reaper, together with the FabFilter plugin suite for professional editing, processing, and mixing. This setup gives me a broad range of recording options, allowing me to capture anything from clean, natural acoustic guitar to detailed amplified electric guitar tones and more heavily processed sounds.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: I’m inspired by musicians and producers such as Wes Montgomery, Pat Martino, Jim Hall, John Scofield, Bill Frisell, Gilad Hekselman, and Kurt Rosenwinkel. I’m particularly inspired by musicians who combine a strong personal sound with thoughtful harmony, melodic improvisation, and a deep sense of composition.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: I most commonly record professional electric and acoustic guitar parts for artists, producers, and songwriters. This includes rhythm guitar, melodic and lead parts, overdubs, and guitar recording in jazz, pop, rock, blues, and other styles. In addition to guitar recording, I work on arranging, songwriting, transcription, reharmonization, mixing, and mastering. I can contribute to projects at different stages, from developing and arranging musical ideas to recording the guitar parts and delivering a polished final production. I focus on playing parts that support the song while bringing a strong musical and individual voice to the production.
