Interview with Sunset Beatz
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I am especially proud of a Gospel single I mixed last year. The artist recorded on a phone mic with a lot of noise, but she has an amazing voice. My role was to clean the vocals, remove noise, tune, mix and master it. When she heard the final, she cried - she said it sounded like a studio in America. That song now has 20k+ streams on YouTube and plays in her church every Sunday. That transformation from rough phone recording to radio-ready is why I love what I do as Sunset Beatz.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Right now I am working on a 6-track Afrobeat EP for an artist from Accra and a Gospel single for a UK-based artist. Both projects need clean vocal mixing and loud masters for Spotify release in November. I am also open to new mixing & mastering clients - I have space for 3 more songs this week with 2-3 days delivery.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: I am still new on SoundBetter, so I don't know other providers personally yet. But I have worked with talented session singers and guitarists from Ghana who I can bring in if my client needs live instruments or backing vocals for Afrobeat / Gospel projects. Just ask me!
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both! I work mostly digital (in-the-box) for speed and recall, using analog-modeled plugins from Waves, SSL, and FabFilter. Digital gives me clean, precise control perfect for Afrobeat and Gospel. But I love analog warmth - I use analog emulation on vocals and master bus to add that rich, warm feel. Best of both worlds - digital precision with analog soul.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: My promise is simple: You will get industry-standard, radio-ready sound, fast delivery, and unlimited support until you are 100% satisfied. If you are not happy with the first mix, I will revise it for free until you love it. No release until you say "this is it". 100% satisfaction guaranteed.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I love the moment when an artist hears their song mixed for the first time and says "WOW, this is me?!" That reaction is priceless. Turning a rough recording into a radio-ready hit that can compete worldwide - especially for African artists - that joy is why I do this every day from Accra.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Q: Can you work with MP3 beats? A: Yes, but WAV is always better quality. If you only have MP3, I can still work but WAV stems will give you a bigger, cleaner sound. Q: How many revisions? A: 2-3 free revisions included until you are 100% happy. Q: How long does it take? A: 2-3 days for mixing, 1-2 days for mastering. Q: Can I pay after? A: SoundBetter protects us both - you pay SoundBetter first, then they release to me after you approve the mix. Safe for both.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: People think mixing is just making it louder. It's not. Mixing is about making every instrument and vocal have its own space, emotion, and clarity. A good mix makes you FEEL the song. Anyone can make it loud, but it takes skill to make it sound expensive, clear, and professional on any speaker - phone, car, or club.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: 1. Can you send me separate WAV stems (not just one MP3)? 2. What are 2-3 reference songs for the sound you want? 3. Is there Auto-Tune / vocal tuning needed? 4. When is your release date? 5. Do you need WAV + MP3 or also stems back? Answering these helps me deliver exactly what you need in 2-3 days.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Send WAV files, not MP3! Always export your vocals and beat as separate WAV stems (24-bit). Don't add reverb or heavy effects on your raw vocals - send them dry so I can mix properly. And communicate - tell me 2 reference songs you like so I can match the sound you want. Good files = great mix.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: 1. My laptop with FL Studio & Pro Tools 2. Yamaha HS8 monitors 3. Audio-Technica M50x headphones 4. Focusrite Scarlett interface 5. My external hard drive with all my plugins - Waves, FabFilter, Ozone With those 5, I can mix a hit anywhere in the world!
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I started as a beatmaker in Accra 5 years ago, making beats for local artists. I fell in love with mixing when artists kept asking me to make their songs sound better. For the last 3 years I have focused fully on mixing and mastering, working with over 100+ independent artists across Ghana, Nigeria, and the US. Now as Sunset Beatz, I help artists worldwide get industry sound from my studio in Accra.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My style is clean, punchy, and modern. Clean vocals, tight drums, warm bass, and wide stereo image. Not over-compressed. I like music to breathe but still be loud enough for radio and Spotify. Especially for Afrobeat and Gospel, I keep it powerful but emotional.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I would love to work with Burna Boy, Sarkodie, and Joe Mettle because they combine African sound with world-class quality. Their music inspires me to push my mixing to global standards. Working with them would be a dream to learn and contribute to African music going global.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Tip: Don't over-process! Many beginners add too much reverb and too much bass. Keep your vocal clean - cut low frequencies below 80Hz on vocals, use light compression, and leave space for the beat. Less is more. A clean mix always wins.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I usually work on Afrobeat, Afropop, Gospel, Hip Hop, Highlife and R&B. But I am open to all genres - good mixing is good mixing. 90% of my clients are independent artists from Africa, US and UK who need industry-standard sound on a budget.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill is vocal mixing - especially Afrobeat and Gospel vocals. I know how to make vocals sit clean, bright and warm on top of the beat without being harsh. Artists always tell me "my voice has never sounded this clear before" - that is my strength.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring clarity, energy, and emotion. I make sure the vocal is front and powerful, the drums hit hard, and the whole song feels expensive and radio-ready. I don't just mix - I add life to the song so it can compete on Spotify and radio worldwide.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: 1. Client sends WAV stems (vocals, beats, drums separately) 2. I organize and clean the tracks, remove noise and fix pitch if needed 3. Mix - EQ, compression, reverb, balance all elements 4. Send first mix for review 5. 2 free revisions based on your feedback 6. Final master at -14 LUFS for streaming platforms Fast turnaround: 2-3 days. You get WAV and MP3 masters. Just message me before ordering and let's make your song a hit!
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My studio is based in Accra, Ghana. DAW: FL Studio, Pro Tools, Logic Pro Monitors: Yamaha HS8, headphones: Audio-Technica M50x Plugins: Waves, FabFilter, SSL, Auto-Tune, Ozone 11 for mastering Interface: Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 Treated room for accurate mixing - what you hear is what you get on Spotify.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I am inspired by engineers like MixedByAli, Jaycen Joshua, and also Ghanaian producers like KillBeatz and Kaywa. For artists, I love the work of Burna Boy, Sarkodie, Joe Mettle and Travis Greene - their sound quality is top level and I study how they keep vocals clear and powerful.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Most of my work is mixing and mastering Afrobeat, Gospel, and Hip Hop for independent artists from Ghana, Nigeria, US and UK. Artists send me their raw vocal and beat stems (WAV), and I turn it into radio-ready, loud and clean music ready for Spotify, Apple Music and YouTube. Clean vocals sitting perfectly on top, punchy drums, and warm low-end is my signature sound.
