Interview with Peter Rangelov

  1. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  2. A: Mixing the latest single from Bulgarian rock band SLNG called "Лъжи и Истини"

  3. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  4. A: Some clients ask me...can you do this song sound like the last Ed Sherran hit? Ok, I say, yes, but why? Don't you wanna be something what represents you? When I write a song for someone, I try to expose his/her talent and bring that into the song.

  5. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  6. A: I ask them how serious they are going with their product. I love to work with people who really want to achieve something more, that motivates me, therefore I give my best.

  7. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  8. A: My advice is people to be patient and let the engineer do the work, research your engineer and once you hire him - trust him!

  9. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  10. A: If there is electricity - laptop / audio interface / monitors / guitar and a mic If there is no electricity - just my acoustic guitar.

  11. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  12. A: I have been playing (and still do) with cover bands professionally for the past 25 years. I traveled all over the world over clubs, bars, hotels, casinos, cruise ships etc. For the past 14 years, after my graduating from a school in Manchester, UK with Music Production and Construction Diploma, also Commercial Engineering Diploma, I started to write, record and produce, mix and master music. So, I'd say I have a full 14 years of experience in a studio work.

  13. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  14. A: My long time favourite bands such as 3 Doors Down, 30 Seconds to Mars, Daughtry, Alex Band from The Calling. Why? Lots of guitars ) Because I simply find myself there, that music fills my heart with happiness!

  15. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  16. A: My favorite one - when mixing, use your monitors at a low level! You will last longer in the business )

  17. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  18. A: Manly POP/ROCK music. But any genre is welcome...

  19. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  20. A: Some people say that to compose a song you gotta come from an emotion. But in my experience, that's not always the case. When I have a client who wants a song like right now, I don't wait for my emotions to come, I grab the guitar and I start writing music, then the ideas is coming and flowing. I believe that inspiration comes with work, you don't wait for it.

  21. Q: What's your typical work process?

  22. A: When I mix a song I start with drums and vocals first, then I add everything else. This how I get the best feel for any song. I work no more than four hours a day and in three days time, I will deliver a final mix and a master.

  23. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  24. A: I work with Logic Pro X in a hybrid studio setup using high quality plugins and some high quality hardware gear from RME, Dave Hill Design, Elysia, Drawmer, Heritage audio, Neve, SPL, Dav Electronics, Ferrofish.

  25. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  26. A: All time favorite producers - Quincy Jones & Desmond Child!

  27. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  28. A: Mixing & Mastering | Session guitarist

  29. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  30. A: My guitar playing and mixing and mastering skills

  31. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  32. A: The album of my own original band who no longer exist. I produced and wrote all 12 songs for the album "Heavy Rain" by D.U.N.E., year 2012. I'm still proud of what I've done with the record.

  33. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  34. A: Probably my misconception is that I don't experiment enough with different styles.

  35. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  36. A: Not really.

  37. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  38. A: Both! I like both worlds. Digital is flexible, recall is easy. Analogue yes, every master I do with some pieces of analogue gear, nothing can beat it. I use both in mix & master.

  39. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  40. A: It will sound great!

  41. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  42. A: It makes me smile and happy, I feel relaxed when I am in the studio and on top of that, I am my boss )

  43. Q: How would you describe your style?

  44. A: I'd say my style goes from pop to /rock/alternative
