Michael did a fabulous job of listening to me and my vision of a song idea that I came to him with. He produced and mixed the song for me and created something I'm really proud of. I would definitely work with MT Sound again and recommend him to anyone else in search of great work!

Interview with Michael Tinker // MT Sound

  1. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  2. A: That this whole process is quick and easy, I've dedicated over a decade of my life to this job, and I still feel like I'm learning and growing as a professional. Creating great art takes time, skill and passion and these are exactly what I bring to every single project I work on.

  3. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  4. A: I ask a bunch of questions to gain an insight into the way that my clients think and work. I want to make sure that I'm the right fit for their project because I want the final product to exceed everyone's expectations. Once I'm confident I can help take the project to where it needs to be, I make sure that I do everything I promised.

  5. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  6. A: Each song is different, so make sure you take the time to work out who is right for your project and go with them. Get to know the people you want to work with and make sure that you're all on the same page with regards to the project.

  7. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  8. A: A world class microphone and preamp, a laptop loaded with fantastic software and virtual instruments, a MIDI keyboard and some incredible headphones.

  9. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  10. A: I started taking drum lessons at the age of 11 and established myself as a committed and serious musician in the local heavy music scene. After recording our first EP I fell in love with being in the studio and spent almost the whole time watching the engineer work. After this I enrolled in a foundation degree in music production before moving to London to study commercial music at the University of Westminster. After I graduated, I moved back to Newcastle and ever since then I've been working with artists all over the world to help them realise their vision for their music.

  11. Q: How would you describe your style?

  12. A: Modern and polished. This doesn't just mean hi-fi, I love lo-fi beats and superbly crafted distortion (Tchad Blake is a master of this) and I really try to use the tools at my disposal to emphasise what my clients are trying to say.

  13. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  14. A: I love artists that have a strong ethical/social/political message that comes across in their lyrical content. Artists such as Killer Mike/Run The Jewels, Zack de la Rocha, Drew Dijorio, Dua Lipa, Billie Eilish, Little Mix etc. These are all artists that I connect with on an emotional level and genuinely love as a fan, not just as a producer.

  15. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  16. A: At the start of 2020 I helped produce/edit/mix Carmen Lees Living Room EP. It was such a fun project and the final sound exceeded anything she thought was possible. 60,000+ streams and counting!

  17. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  18. A: I'm currently working on a pop/soul track, a country album and a metal track. Staying diverse lets me bring new ideas and sounds to everything I work on.

  19. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  20. A: I promise to fully invest my time and skills into your art. I won't cut corners or compromise and I will deliver an incredible final product that you'll be proud of for the rest of your career.

  21. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  22. A: Knowing that I've helped my clients achieve something that they initially thought was out of their reach. Nothing makes me happier than knowing I've helped them achieve something they thought was impossible.

  23. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  24. A: This guy I know can do it for cheaper, will you match his price? In short, no I won't. My price is based on my years of experience and my dedication to making great art. I fully commit myself to everything that I work on, and that's what I ask of my clients. If they expect me to fully invest in their music, then I ask them to do the same. I want your work to stand head and shoulders above everything else that you've done so far, so let's invest in each other and make it happen.

  25. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  26. A: The listener doesn't connect with your snare sound, they connect with the vocal. Make sure the emotion is there so that the listener has something to relate to so that they want to listen again and again. If you can connect with your listeners on an emotional level, you're good to go.

  27. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  28. A: Hip Hop / Trap / Pop / Country / Rock / Metal.

  29. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  30. A: The ability to take your ideas and bring them to life in ways you didn't realise were possible. I take pride in helping my clients to exceed their own expectations and take their music to the next level.

  31. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  32. A: The same level of care and attention that you've put into the project yourself. I draw on my years of experience to elevate the project and bring the best out of everyone that chooses to hire me.

  33. Q: What's your typical work process?

  34. A: It starts off with a conversation. I want to get to know my clients before I work with them. I want to know why you've written these songs, what they mean to you and where you want them to go. Then I'll work to craft something that compliments your ideas and mindset, which gives you something more inspiring to perform to. After recording the vocals, I then edit and mix the track to emphasise the emotion and meaning behind the song. My style of mixing centres on the lyrical content and I do everything I can to make sure that the mix reflects what you're trying to say. After this, the song(s) will be ready to send off to mastering for the final polish and quality control.

  35. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  36. A: I'm fully mobile, so my setup is very modest. This keeps costs lower for my clients without sacrificing any quality. It also allows me to come to my clients and work in an environment that they're comfortable in, all of which leads to a better performance and better end product.

  37. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  38. A: Paul Epworth, Young Guru, Timbaland, Mike Dean, Illangelo, Jaycen Joshua, Andrew Scheps, Tchad Blake, Andy Wallace, Michael Brauer and so many more. I could spend all day listing people that inspire me, both inside and outside of the music industry. Great art inspires me to produce great art.

  39. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  40. A: Taking a song from an initial idea/demo, all the way through to the final product. I help my clients to bring out the best from their music through custom made beats/productions and mixing. People hire me because they want a sound that can compete with commercial tracks on radio and charts.
