Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: - What services does the client need or want? - Can you send me reference songs that are similar to what you want to have mixed? - If you're not sending a Pro Tools session and it's from another DAW, can you bounce the stems of each track to WAV? - When sending WAV stems, unless it is how you want it to sound, can you make sure there are no plug-ins or effects on the tracks before exporting?
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: My promise to my clients is to deliver a product that not only meets but exceeds their expectations.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: As a mixing engineer, what I enjoy most about my job is the opportunity to be a part of the creative journey of artists and musicians. There's a certain satisfaction in taking raw audio tracks and sculpting them into a cohesive and compelling sonic masterpiece.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: As a mixing engineer, one of the biggest misconceptions about what I do is that it's a simple and straightforward process that anyone with basic audio software can accomplish. While it's true that technology has made it more accessible for aspiring musicians to dabble in mixing, the reality is that professional mixing is a highly skilled and nuanced craft that requires years of training, experience, and a deep understanding of both the technical and artistic aspects of audio engineering.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: A great recording tip used in almost every Pop and R&B song that makes vocal hooks sound huge and have depth. Triples - Main lead vocal that's panned center, then sing 2 new takes (copying the lead melody) and pan one left and the other right. This effect will give you a huge sound that is wide and has depth. Harmonies - After the main lead triples. Sing 2 or 4 new takes of each harmonic melody separately and pan them left and right. This is how you get thick and wide harmonies. It's a grueling process but adds so much dimension and quality to a beautiful song.
