Interview with Joe Taylor
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I wrote a vocal for a single upcoming for Kygo and Callum Scott.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: David Guetta, Kygo, Callum Scott, Fedde Le Grande, Robin Schultz, Dub Vision + many more Lots of sync/TV music for Universal Pm and BMGPM
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Whichever - It’s not more gear you need it’s more good ideas. The gear comes after.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: QUALITY!
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Being free to express myself and emotion and collaborate with people from all over the world sharing art.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Customer - How long will this take?? Me - not long at all.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: How long things take, some people take months to write a song fortunately I’m quite a fast worker when it comes to it.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: Lyric references, melody references, timeline.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Go with your gut. You know inside what you want from your music. You will know when you know and hopefully I’ll be working on your song…
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Guitar, voice, mic, interface, laptop
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I’ve been working in music for 15 years professionally for 5 years and signed my publishing deal 4 months ago.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Raspy, full of emotion and Big.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I’d love to work with the late David Ruffin as his vocal in The Temptations ‘Ain’t To Proud Too Beg’ is flawless in my eyes.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Always take your time with the comping as this is the key to that perfect vocal. Check through every take snd look for parts of the vocal that are quirky perfectly in tune isn’t always best, look for things that stand out and spark emotion.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Anything really but love pop/house/hits.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My biggest strength is defiantly working pop vocals and creating unforgettable ‘ear-worms’ to annoy you all day, also the ability to both write and sing to a professional level. For me it’s always about quality and doing right by the song.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring a very unique touch vocally as I don’t aspire to be anything I’m not. I have a very raw quality to my vocal. Since signing to my publishers I’ve become one of their most desired topliners and vocalists world wide working with some of the biggest names in the buisness (check my credits)
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I usually work backwards so the hook/chorus comes first and then work on the verses and pre. Into the second verse that’s nearly the same melody but with a slight variation the nee the excitement. I can turn songs around fast and work well to deadlines
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I’m based at Tileyard london (Kings Cross) I have a fully sound treated studio with exceptional equipment for that perfect vocal sound.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I’m very much inspired by old soul treasures from Marvin Gaye to the temptations. In terms of current music I would put myself next to Rag N Bone Man / Lewis Capaldi / John Newman / Jacob Banks.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I work professionally as a Topliner writing, singing & editing. I have extensive knowledge of writing vocals in different musical genres to suit whatever the Cliant wants.
I was the Topliner and vocalist in this production
