Mattie Foulds on SoundBetter

Your music and sonic vision are my highest priority!

I make and play music everyday for my clients and for my enjoyment. I love music and creating music with others. Most of the time I'm Engineering/Producing/Mixing and Mastering sessions for Artists and Bands in the UK's vibrant Folk/Roots and Singer-Songwriter and Jazz scenes. I've also been a session drummer for almost 30 years now recording many different styles, from "pocket" playing for Singer/Songwriters to full on Jazz improv. I have a comfortable, relaxed and creative studio in the Scottish countryside near Edinburgh. I use this room for Mixing/Mastering/Composition and remote Drum Tracking. I have great mics, pre's, compressors and effects, all to get the sound your looking for. Check out www.caribourecording.com
For larger ensemble tracking sessions I use Castlesound Studios. It is the biggest and best studio in Scotland and happens to be 10 minutes from my house :-) See www.castlesound.co.uk

Mattie is a stunning drummer and awesome engineer - traits bound together by warmth, enthusiasm and wit, all of which makes work with him seem like anything but. Caribou is great to escape to, freeing the creative spirit and capturing the results perfectly.

I have worked on various recording projects with Mattie over the last decade. He gets the best fiddle sound ever, keeps me right in the most supportive way when I am not hitting those notes, coaxes great performances out of me and is generally a bit of a star! Caribou is a great space, generously proportioned and in a stunning location. We have made some great videos there too. Mattie is always 100% focussed, has real attention for detail and takes pride and care in all his recording work as well as being a great musician himself. What's not to like.

I recently worked with Mattie on the new album from Norma Waterson and Eliza Carthy, Anchor, which he was engineering. His recording and mixing techniques were superb and on top of that he gave my cor anglais the most amazing reverb!

This was my third time working with Mattie on an album so I knew how great he was to work with, but Caribou was really special. A beautiful location with a view that is ever changing and enough space to be creative and focused. Mattie and I produced my latest record Here's My Heart Come Take It together at Caribou. It was a very exciting and creative time. Mattie took the lead but was also very patient with my requests and changes! He would go out of his way to make sure I was happy with the final mix. I can't recommend Mattie and Caribou highly enough. A wonderful place to record an album!

Mattie Foulds has everything you could want in an engineer - expertise, patience, creativity, great ears and impeccable taste. If you want to make a great record, there’s a few places you could go - but if you want to make a great record in a beautiful, peaceful and supportive environment then go to Caribou.

We (The Biscuit Tin Collective) recorded our first album with Mattie and later this year, we will be returning to Caribou to start the second...we didn't even consider going elsewhere because no other studio has Mattie Foulds.

I've worked with Mattie on all three of my solo albums - it's great to work with him as a producer, and he's my very favourite drummer in all the world! I'd heartily recommend him :)

I worked with Mattie on my first album at Caribou Recording. He did an amazing job - it turned out better than I could have imagined, and he’s a super cool bloke too. I would highly recommend him!

Mattie has engineered and/or produced several of my solo albums, as well as additional percussion and vocal sessions for collaborative projects. Everything always sounds great. And the studio environment is a peaceful place in which to record.

Mattie (and his mobile studio) worked on Bella Hardy and I’s songwriting retreat at Moniack Mhor Cretive Writing Centre, Scotland. He is held in high regard for his work with established artists and he is also fantastic (patient and kind) with people new to the recording and songwriting processes.

Interview with Mattie Foulds

  1. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  2. A: I promise to give your production respect. I always learn from my clients, no matter how experienced they are. Every artist is different and has something new to offer. I will give your project my time and respect.

  3. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  4. A: I get to create! Making something out of nothing is an amazing thing!

  5. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  6. A: Maybe that because I don't tour a lot anymore, that I'm not playing drums very much. Which couldn't be further from the truth. I play on most of the records I work on. And write and record new music all the time. I honestly feel I've never been better at my job than right now!

  7. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  8. A: I like to help bring the best out of an artist or song. I try to find the key element and bring that out as much as possible. Listening to the music and the artists vision is key!

  9. Q: What's your typical work process?

  10. A: I first listen. Then I let the song or mood of the music guide me to the right musical parts and production techniques.

  11. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  12. A: Creative, comfortable and relaxed atmosphere in a rural setting outside of Edinburgh, UK. Three main recording spaces, a control room, amp room, lounge and kitchen. Lots of great instruments like a 100 year old 7" Broadwood Barless Grand Piano, DW, Yamaha and Slingerland drums, Vintage Rhodes Suitcase 73, Hammond M103 w/760 Leslie. Lots of great mics from Neumann, Soundelux, AKG, Oktava, Coles etc... visit http://www.caribourecording.com/ for the full details, photos and tracks to hear.

  13. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  14. A: Jim Keltner, Bob Clearmountain, Tchad Blake, Greg Wells, Josh Freese, Ash Soan, Rick Reuban and YOU!

  15. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  16. A: The new Eliza Carthy/Norma Waterson and Gift Band record was a highlight of last year that is about to be released. I took all my gear doen to RobinHoods Bay in Yorkshire and set it up in an old church and recorded them all playing live. I then mixed it in my studio. I think it's really special.

  17. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  18. A: Currently spending a lot of time with my collaborator and friend Mikey Owers making Production Music for Film and TV in a new project called Broken Bembé

  19. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  20. A: Been a session drummer for nearly 30 years and a record producer/mixer for 15.

  21. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  22. A: Performers can only do great performances when they feel free and comfortable with their surroundings and the people their working with. If you have that anything is possible.

  23. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  24. A: Contemporary Folk, Singer/Songwriter, Jazz

  25. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  26. A: Engineering albums and singles. Producing new music. Live remote drum tracking. Production music for TV/Film
