Nate Owen on SoundBetter

My name is Nate. I am a music producer from Universal Music. Worked with and for famous DJs. All kind of music, from Pop to Underground. You can contact me for more demos in different styles, such as CamelPhat, Mark Knight, Meduza etc... styles and make your next electronic music hit !

I worked for years with majors and indie music labels, such as Universal music (singers, promotional videos, soundtracks), SONY, Warner, Defected, Toolroom, Spinnin', Armada to name a few.

My target now, is to work directly with the artist that are looking for a professional view of their work and ideas.
Originality is important, and I will help artists to craft their own originality. From Pop singers to Electronic music DJs, the key is the quality and the concept.
This when I come in by providing artists with high quality musics, productions and engineering that you can hear from music labels listed earlier.
The way I work is that simple: A few skype or messenger calls, or even a One Day online studio booking and the artist and me will work together on getting your own custom productions.

You can of course message me for questions, and it will be my pleasure to answer and work with you.

Let our minds and creativity speak for us.

Interview with Nate Owen

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I worked as ghost producer for an artist (which I won't say the name because: ghost producer contract) and the song was nominated to the Grammy's in the Dance section.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I am working now on movie soundtracks for an upcoming Universal movie in 2019, 2 albums from US hip hop/trap artists, and a few productions for DJs.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: I sadly know nobody, but I am really interested to know a lot of artists in there !

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: I actually LOVE analog, it seems like the sounds are alive and pure ! But digital is very good too, as analog is something very expensive and needs a different knowledge to use them.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: My promise is to get the artist happy and satisfied !

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: Being able to do so much different things. From a movie score to a deep underground song. And still seeing emotions and feelings in people's eyes, this is what I love the most !

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: How long will it take for an entire production ? I usually answer: 2 to 3 days !

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: People usually think that production seems easy. But starting something new everyday, something different, from nothing except a simple melody in the head, is one hard thing to do. It is like when an author wants to write a 400 pages book, by just having a 2 lines script idea.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: What kind of music ? How does your voice sound like ? Which genre and style are you inspired the most ? Which artists get you inspired ?

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: I advice the artist to have clear ideas and to know exactly what she/he is looking for. We will then talk about your ideas, and I will give you my point of view from it and together we can work in harmony and bring something very fresh !

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: My Mac Pro, a mini keyboard, my extern disk (love), my headphones (to not disturb the beautiful nature around) and I guess that's it. Only 4.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I started being interested in music production at 12 years old (young right ?). I wanted to do music after listening for the first time to Discovery by Daft Punk. I then studied at SAE music school in Zurich, Switzerland while in the same time starting my major label career. I am now 23 years old and I am working with major labels since my 17's year.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: Radio ready, original.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: As I worked with artists such as Drake, Future, Aoki etc... I would love now to work on something with DJ Snake. He is a musical genius and marketing master.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Keys. The most important is: know what KEY your song is. It will then help you a lot during your production process and make great harmonies.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: I usually work on Modern Pop music, but I get a lot of work on Trap/EDM and Hip-Hop/Trap like Drake etc...

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: Melodies writing and chords progressions.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I bring the vibes and originality that I experienced within the years I worked with Major labels. I do understand what works nowadays in the music industry, while being able to stay original.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: I first ask the artist some example or influences that he gets. Obviously not to copy, but get inspired and make something original and unique out of it. Then we start, and I keep the artist daily updated (2 to 3 days for an entire production).

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: I have 2 studios, one based in Basel (Switzerland) and one in Berlin (Germany). I have also my own studio in Paris, which contains Genelec 8351, my Mac Pro, ShadowHills Mastering Compressor, Guitars, Piano, Moog Sub 37 etc...

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: I got inspired a lot by Diplo and Skrillex recently. Both are new musical geniuses. But I also get a lot of inspiration coming from artists such as Drake, that is something very unique.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: I mostly do music productions and ghost productions for artists and DJs that are looking for something in particular.
