Leo Kalyan on SoundBetter

Producer, Songwriter, Vocalist - co-wrote UK & global smash number 1 song "Head & Heart" by Joel Corry & MNEK. My music plays on radio stations all around the world (as I am also an artist myself) and I make music with/for artists including David Guetta, Mabel, Years & Years, MNEK, Becky Hill, Duke Dumont, Michael Calfan, Mahalia.

I've written & produced songs for a long list of global Pop stars and DJs -- and being an artist myself, I can see the process from all angles to give you exactly what you require.

Pop, Dance, R&B, House are all genres that I regularly work in. So whether you're trying to create a Top 40 radio song or a left-field experimental track - I can help you:

- Create original songs from scratch
- Write lyrics, melodies and toplines
- Do additional production on pre-existing tracks
- Find an individual "sound"
- Mix & Master your music, ready for release

I work fast and can usually turn a project around within 1 week. If you're outside London we can work remotely. Most of my clients are international & we work together very effectively!

My rates vary from project to project, depending on how much time is required -- so send me a message and we can go from there.

Send me an email through 'Contact' button above and I'll get back to you asap.

Leo worked on a demo track I had and it was an amazing experience. He really took the track to a different level and I can tell he worked very carefully on it. He always replied promptly and was really easy to work with. I am so happy with how the project turned out and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend - or work with - Leo again.

Brilliant experience working with Leo on one of my recent tracks. He took my initial idea and improved it immensely in terms of melody, lyrics, & the overall vibe. Leo was responsive and professional throughout, and his talent speaks for itself! Highly recommend.

Interview with Leo Kalyan

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I loved writing and producing tracks for Mabel and Years & Years. I also really enjoyed working on House toplines and vocals for Duke Dumont and Michael Calfan.

  3. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  4. A: People don't realise the wide range of things I can do: I sing, make beats, write lyrics and can make tracks sound "finished". People assume that because I'm an artist myself - I get someone else to do those things - but I do it all myself.

  5. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  6. A: Pharrell, because I know I would learn so much.

  7. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  8. A: If you're clear about what you want the final track to sound like, I promise I can create something you'll love.

  9. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  10. A: Q: "I don't have a very big budget - can you do this for $100?" A: I'm afraid not, sadly. Like everyone else, I have bills to pay! When I first started out, I scraped together every last penny I had from working at a bar - to pay a producer to make my first demos. That led me to work with more producers, and I learned my craft on the job. Making music is time-consuming - and that's why it costs what it does.

  11. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  12. A: If there was ONE song by another artist that you want your track to sound like (but not imitate), what would it be? One track only. References are key.

  13. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  14. A: Think carefully about what you want your track to sound like. Have references in mind. Be extremely clear in your communication and don't hesitate to say if you're not happy with something - I have zero ego and am always willing to make changes so that you're happy with the final result.

  15. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  16. A: My laptop, hard drive, a midi keyboard, monitors and a microphone. That's pretty much all you need. I'm hoping this desert island has electricity though. Otherwise i'd be the island chef, since I love to cook.

  17. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  18. A: Pop, R&B, House, EDM, Electronica, Left-field - these are all genres I regularly work on.

  19. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  20. A: I'm extremely versatile, very creative and very adaptable. Since i'm an artist myself, as well as a vocalist/songwriter/producer - I can view a project from all angles.

  21. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  22. A: I have a strong sense of lyrics and melody, since I have written so many songs for myself and other artists - across most genres. I know what is required to make a track sound "finished" - or release/radio ready. I have a proven track record of making songs sound good.

  23. Q: What's your typical work process?

  24. A: People usually contact me with an idea for a song, or the rough beginnings of a song demo - and I help them complete it. This can involve writing lyrics and a topline, recording vocals, guiding the vocal production of another singer, contributing additional production where needed - or even re-doing the production entirely. It varies from project to project.

  25. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  26. A: I work on Logic Pro X and use Tannoy Reveal 802 monitors. I record vocals on a Neumann U87 Microphone and use an RME Babyface sound card. I have a Prophet 8 synth and microKORG Synth, and also use Waves & UAD Mastering plugins.

  27. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  28. A: Rick Rubin, KSHMR, Timbaland, Pharrell, Max Martin, Spike Stent.

  29. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  30. A: I write songs (lyrics, melodies, toplines), record vocal demos, produce beats & tracks from scratch, do additional production to pre-existing tracks, mix and/or master songs so they sound polished and complete.
