Interview with SlikNik (Niko Stoessl)
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: it's in the bio :)
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: most of my clients these days are solo artist's who need the "full package". Since I'm a pretty decent musician myself I can offer a wide range of services at a professional level.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: luckily enough I already do/did work with some of my favourite artists Depeche Mode, Dave Gahan, Patrice, IAMX, etc.. I'd love to Thom Yorke though :)
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: finalizing the music, listening to the finished piece
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: Actually there's quite a few. As a producer, probably the single I did with Motoboy and Nina Persson (Cardigans). I co wrote the song "Dead for Seconds", recorded, produced and mixed it. It was great to do my own thing with such an iconic singer. Another one would be Dave Gahan (Depeche Mode). I had the opportunity to work with two of my best friends (Christian Eigner and Andrew Phillpott, the producers...) on his great solo album - "Hourglass"
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I'm currently working on many projects, some of my own - some others.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: digital - I like/need to recall/autiomation.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: If I decide to do a project, I make sure it comes out the best possible way. I don't wanna work on something I wouldn't wanna listen to myself - my standards are high in that regard
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: that you can fix it in the mix
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: depends on what my role is.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: make sure that the person you wanna work understands your vision
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: my computer, good speakers, 1 good mic, 1 good synth, 1 guitar
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: electronic meets organic
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: good preproduction/vision
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: mostly a combination of Electronica with played/recorded elements
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: producing, mixing, wrapping things up
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: my own style combined with what the client wants, international sound
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: depends on when I get involved. As a mixer I ask for a rough mix/demo of a song, then I decide if I feel the job. If it "clicks" between me and the artist, we start communicating about the project...
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: These days I do everything "in the box". Since I'm used to the analog world, I'm very picky when it comes to sound quality, so I mainly use UAD, Weiss, SSL, FabFilter, Soundtoys, etc... the good stuff :)
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Depeche Mode, Trentemöller, Stephan Bodzin, Queens of the Stoneage, Deftones, Tory Amos, Radiohead, Thom Yorke
