Self-taught, genre-flexible producer whose work spans soul, smooth jazz, funk, and pop—crafting real, emotional productions using digital instruments and ear-driven precision mixes.
I’m Howard Lakins-Graves—a self-taught producer originally from Pittsburgh, PA, and now based in Tennessee.
I’ve been creating music since age five and producing since twelve.
My sound focuses on groove and feel. I build productions using soft synths and digital instruments, mixing as I go to shape a clean, real-sounding track from the ground up. I also showcase this ear-driven approach in my original body of work and on my YouTube channel (OfficialHowardLG), where I recreate full artist productions from scratch—arrangement, sound design, and feel—entirely by ear.
I’ve released several projects, including the Grammy-considered Still Lovin’, featuring Brian McKnight Jr., Derran Day, Courtney Bennett, and Joey Diggs Jr., with recognition from producers like Bob Baldwin, David Harness, Timbaland, and Tee Lopes.
If you’re looking for clean production, musicality, energy, or laid piano tracks, I’d love to help bring your vision to life.
All work is provided as "Work for Hire" unless I contribute original melodies or original production. Contact me for further questions or details to discuss—let’s get to work!

Interview with Howard Lakins-Graves
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill is putting music together—building a full production instrument by instrument and sitting listening back at the end of the session in amazement at how I came up with the composition and a great sounding mix.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I create as I go—like a recipe—adding one ingredient at a time and perfecting the sound before moving on. I mix as I produce, which helps shape the direction early on instead of fixing an unbalanced track later. When I’m done, I take a break and return with fresh ears, making final adjustments.
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: My album Still Lovin’ is a project I’m extremely proud of. I produced it, arranged it. Bringing together talented artists who know what I'm looking for. Going through these jams, I was making a cautious decision on what I felt was the strongest fit for the album.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I recently released my new album Still Lovin’, featuring Brian McKnight Jr, Derran Day, Courtney Bennett, and Joey Diggs Jr.—an 11-song project that was up for Grammy consideration.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Yes, artist-wise — Derran Day (singer & songwriter) and Brian McKnight Jr. (singer, songwriter, and producer).
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Digital—quick, easy, and instantly accessible.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: To deliver quality and work on your project until it’s right. I’d want the same level of care if it were my own body of work, so that’s how I treat everything I touch.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Producing, creating, and helping artists bring their work to life.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: N/A
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: People think I’m a full-out musician, but I consider myself just “alright” on keys. What I truly love is producing—putting all the instruments together into a complete production. I'm very great at creating with soft synths, digitalized instruments and making them sound REAL. It's all in the ear.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: • What are you looking for? • What ideas do you already have in mind? • Is there anything you’d like improved, enhanced, or changed?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: You don’t have to second-guess me. I’m a perfectionist—I understand even in collaboration, you are investing your hard-earned money and want the end results to be right. I perfect my own body of work until it's right. So, I treat your project as if it were my own.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: My PC, Ultra widescreen monitor, audio interface, keyboard/piano, and Lewitt microphone.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I’ve been producing since I was 12 years old and playing keys since 5. Producing is truly a work of art for me—like a Bob Ross painting—but in sound.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: R&B and Jazzy with a funky energy. Soulful, rhythmic, and expressive.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Chris Brown, Usher, and Lalah Hathaway—they each bring emotion, musicality, and soul, which aligns perfectly with my sound.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Don’t focus too much on the textbook approach to mixing—use your ears. Your ears will always tell you what makes sense and what approaches to take based on how you feel about the overall sound mix. Everybody mixes differently; there is no "correct" mix.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: R&B, Smooth Jazz, Funky grooves, and some Pop.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Energy and feel. Without emotion, a song has nothing. I focus on making the listener feel something, and I believe that less is more.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I use a Windows PC (32GB RAM, RTX 4070, 7TB storage) with a Focusrite Scarlett 18i20, SC-Tube preamp, Lewitt Audio mics, JBL MKII 5" monitors, Audio-Technica headphones, Avid keyboard controller, Samsung Ultra OLED G9 widescreen monitor, Loads of soft synths+Keyscape, Waves Plugins, Pro Tools Studio for mixing, and Reason 13 for production.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Michael Jackson, Quincy Jones, Usher, Chris Brown, and Richard Jacques all inspire me.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I’m mainly a music producer, building full productions from scratch. I also provide piano tracks.
