Interview with Derran Day
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I wrote and sang the song “My Word” for the ‘Black Love’ documentary. It was a very meaningful song for a very touching documentary. I’m forever grateful to the Black Love crew for allowing me to be a part of their journey.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I’m working on a couple very cool tracks from a client in the states and from a client on the other side of the world. Connecting with people around the globe is the most satisfying part of this job
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: I do not know anyone else on SoundBetter at the moment.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Digital because cool gigs like this wouldn’t exist without it.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I promise I’ll get you the quality sound you’re looking for, and I’ll get it to you in a very timely fashion
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Making music..It’s just fun man..I wouldn’t have it any other way.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Can you bring this song to life? I most certainly can!
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That the work is easy..it’s not, but I love the process so it’s all good.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: Are you ready to make a hit or no? Because I’m DEFINITELY ready.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Vocalize any and every idea/concern..it’s the little details that truly make a song. My job is to help bring that magic to life. It’s your vision, so let’s paint this picture together.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Easy..My Mic, my piano, my headphones, a comfortable chair, and something to record some beautiful music with.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: My career path was to make music by any means necessary. I started working for online session sites about 5 years ago. I have done over 500 hundred songs for clients all over the world.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My style is emotional and soulful, smooth but still raw when it needs to be.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Some of the new artists out here killing it..Lucky Daye, HER, Serpentwithfeet, Sampha..anyone who really knows how to tell a story with their voice..count me in.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Always finish the song..no matter how tempted you are to quit.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I’m typically requested to work on R&B/Soul/Pop songs
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My Dynamic vocals are my strongsuit..come see for yourself!
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring natural/raw emotion while still maintaining a quality sound. I like to make the song my own, while still following the vision of whoever is requesting my services..I want us to feel like what we are creating is as unique as it is professional..which tends to create more satisfying results
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I like to get a feel for the song first..listen all the way through a handful of times until the ideas/melodies come naturally. My recording process is pretty straight forward..I like to record each part all the way through for continuity purposes..then make whatever adjustments are needed to enhance the song. I like to give it a rough mix so the client can at least hear what I had in mind regarding how the vocals should sound. Then I play it back a few times to make sure everything is good, and bounce that baby out. Simple enough!
