Interview with Lyon Hart
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I've been singing since I was born and I start working as a professional musician at 15.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Nothing beats a great microphone for vocals.
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I wrote "Heartbeat" for DJ Nicky Romero ft. Brooke Forman. The song has been performed at festivals worldwide and it's amazing to see your words being sung by 30,000 people.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: New Lyon Hart songs, cowriting with other artists, making hits with SoundBetter musicians.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Brooke Forman Music!
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Digital. If you're on a budget, tracking down the best rooms and the best analog gear can cost you a fortune. Also, the ability to make music anywhere opens up a whole new world of inspiration. BUT... nothing beats a real grand piano.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: Professional, high-quality, inspiring sounds.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I love that moment when you send off a new song and you love it, but there's always a chance that the producer wants something different. When they email back I LOVE IT - that's such a payoff!
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: "When can I have this done?" My answer: Tell me when you need it and we'll work it out!
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: Singers don't make "Mariah hands" in the booth while we're singing. Ok... maybe I do...
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: Who are your inspirations for this song? Are there specific songs you want to emulate? Do you prefer a natural sounding vocal or something more pop/cutting edge?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Have as specific an idea of what your looking for as possible. It saves you and whoever you hire a lot of time and money to do it right the first time!
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: My laptop, my brand new Manley microphone, my Apollo, a midi controller, and a mug for tea.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Emotional melodies and compelling lyrics through a pop filter.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I would love to work with Calvin Harris or Zedd. They always have the coolest features and are constantly driving the direction the music industry is going.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Pop, EDM, House, Indie Rock, Country.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My vocals and my positive, professional attitude.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring professionalism, emotional honesty, a compelling performance, and on time delivery.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Depends on the project! If I'm writing a topline, I'll usually get an almost finished track or just simple chords to write over and some references of songs they like and/or want the song to sound like. I then work on a rough sketch of a vocal and send it back to the producer/DJ. From there, there's a little back and forth and then I go into creating the final song. For vocal demos or singing features someone else has written, I get a track with a reference vocal and an instrumental track to sing over. I then record in my home studio, comp the vocal, tune it and send it back for notes. Often I will wait to add harmonies, ad libs until the client is happy with the lead vocal, but that is always negotiable.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I work out of a home studio with world-class equipment. I run a Manley Reference C Tube Mic through an Apollo Twin and my DAW is Logic Pro X.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Ryan Tedder/OneRepublic, Zedd, Matthew Koma
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Vocal toplines, piano, vocal production.
