I'm Craig McAllister, a producer and platinum certified mixing & mastering engineer. From an early age I've been playing and producing music, but in recent years have been working mainly with the artist Abstract. Together we have collaborated on multiple tracks reaching tens of millions across the world. I graduated in 2015 with a masters in electronic engineering and after a successful career at CERN, I began working on music full-time.

I'll work closely with you to create a radio ready mix/master for your project by providing a more personal approach than standard mixing/mastering 'factories'.

    Another excellent project with Cryo.
He has a good ear for mixing vocals. He takes them that extra step I wouldn't be able to without his expertise. Fast workflow and great execution!

Another finished product of true professional quality. Cryo's mixes are fantastic. I've worked with him for many years now and he always does a great job! The communication and understanding of what the clients wants from the mix is always on point with Cryo. Thank you for yet another great mix. Looking forward to get more work done with you!

Found Craig from listening to Abstract's songs. His mixes are super clean and crisp. Vocals tastefully compressed and eq'd. Always happy with the end result. Been sending him songs for over a year now!

Craig's mixes are incredible! Unlike other mixing engineers, Craig offers a very personable experience and does not finish the mix until you are 100% happy with the song. High quality, fast delivery and excellent communication with the clients. 10/10 would recommend.

    Cryo's vocal mixes are superb.
There aren't many who can do it as good as him. He is also very reliable and doesn't finish the mix until you're satisfied. I recommend him over any other professional on Soundbetter!

I’ve worked with Craig many times, and each time was a super pleasant, and super awesome experience. He can really transform a track with his skills, and make you feel like you’re hearing it for the first time. And he’s just a joy to work with! I wouldn’t trust a track or a vocal with as much confidence with anyone else. Highly recommend.

Interview with Cryo Music

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I recently completed a massive project for Abstract. The project is called Super Human and includes not only a 19 track album, but also a short film! I produced 11 of the tracks and mixed/mastered them all. In addition I created the scores and sound design for the film (I'd love to do this more often!).

  3. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  4. A: Both have their place! Analog adds that extra something special that's hard to pinpoint. Digital is incredibly convenient (I can't carry a tape machine to a friends house or studio....) and can sound incredible too.

  5. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  6. A: I won't finish a job until you're 100% happy! I'll keep in touch with you and I'll keep working until you're satisfied.

  7. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  8. A: I get to work with incredibly talented people that are passionate about what they do. That's something that's tricky to find any many other industries!

  9. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  10. A: 1. Dell XPS15 2. Bose QC35 (I've used these headphones every day and I know exactly how they sound) 3. Apollo 8 + UAD Plugins 4. Phone with good data connection for tethering (.wav files are big...!) 5. A solar array so I can charge my gear!

  11. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  12. A: I studied Electronics Engineering at Glasgow University where I designed audio amplifiers and speaker systems among other projects. However, I've had a passion for music since my early years. I began learning my main instruments (saxophone and bass guitar) when I was around 13 or 14 years old. I continued playing for several years and began learning composition and production. I began University when I was 17 years old and it was around this time that I met the artist Abstract. Since then I've worked together with Abstract on projects reaching hundreds of millions across the world through Spotify, iTunes, radio, live shows etc. For the past 8 years or so I've been passionate about mixing, mastering and production. I've been working on a 'word of mouth' basis to attract a few select clients, but have only just started to reach out to other artists. I've been working on music full-time since September 2018!

  13. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  14. A: As things stand currently I've worked mainly on hip-hop. This is a genre that's notorious for having poor dynamics and audio quality. I think this is one of the reasons that I've enjoyed trying to improve things (we're getting there!)

  15. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  16. A: I've studied in depth the exact specifications required by Spotify to maximise dynamics and volume. This is something only a few have taken the time to research and it's very apparent when listening to the tracks I've worked on. My style is to maximise dynamics in a track and to offer a natural and professional sound that'll work on any sound system. My tracks have been performed on Spotify, radio, live shows... (you name it!), and my methods ensure the final product sounds great everywhere.

  17. Q: What's your typical work process?

  18. A: Perfection takes time. I can't finish a mix or master in one day without referencing the next day. I'll always take a listen the next day to make final subtle adjustments to the project.

  19. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  20. A: My studio is based around the Universal Audio Apollo 8 and UAD suite. It offers extremely accurate models of outboard analogue gear and is the industry standard. I love working on a laptop based system as it lets me head to any studio setup and fire up any project I'm working on!

  21. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  22. A: I'm a huge fan of Jon Bellion's latest sound style both in terms of production and mixing. I've learned a lot by analysing his sound and can see why he's regarded as one of the best.
