Interview with Josh Graves

  1. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  2. A: Be realistic. Listen carefully. Be specific.

  3. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  4. A: I’ve been writing songs on my guitar since 2011.

  5. Q: How would you describe your style?

  6. A: A mix of sad vampire music and caddy tea.

  7. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  8. A: I’m not picky.

  9. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  10. A: Don’t write what you think people want to hear or is popular. Write whatever makes the creativity and passion you feel inside feel utilized.

  11. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  12. A: Alternative rock and Metalcore/Hardcore.

  13. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  14. A: Dedication.

  15. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  16. A: A whole lifetime of listening to multiple artists and genres. Years of be entrenched in this medium and knowing how to borrow from one genre to add to another. Versatility is key.

  17. Q: What's your typical work process?

  18. A: Wake up, pour coffee, sit down at my desk and start writing. My songs often start by knowing what mood I want to convey, then I’ll play around with pianos, synths or a riff on one of my guitars. Everything just falls into place after that. I can usually finish writing and recording a whole song in eight hours.

  19. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  20. A: I’ll be as transparent as possible with you, I’m not a producer with an expensive built studio. It’s my dog and I, a computer and the undying belief that you really don’t need an expensive setup to sound good. You’d be surprised what you can get away with in the world of audio production.

  21. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  22. A: I always hate this question - so many artists come and go in terms of how influential they are to me. I’ve always appreciated artists like Landon Tewers for his flexibility within genres and outside the box thinking when recording. Bring Me The Horizon has always been fascinating to follow as they have truly become a powerhouse within the industry.

  23. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  24. A: The producer of my band that we used to send our tracks to for mixing and mastering once told me “I’m jealous of how much time you can dedicate to making music.” There is no limit to the passion, creativity and time I can throw at transposing my thoughts and feelings into an audible slice of my life. This is what I want to do for anyone willing to give me the chance to work with them. I’m wholly dedicated to making your visions come to life.
