Sebastian Rojas Baquero on SoundBetter

I'm a Producer/Recording/Mixing engineer and I'm not just passionate about making the best sounding records I also work very hard to make the music (your music!) the most interesting and compelling as it possibly can and develop a unique sound together with the artist.

Sebastian is a producer, recording, and mixing engineer based in Berlin. He works together with musicians, film composers, and directors to craft music and sonic landscapes. "I really love working with different people and in different disciplines. One week I might be producing a singer-songwriter while mixing a Rockband and the next week I'm mixing a huge TV score or producing the music for VR experience".

Sebastian draws inspiration and lessons from all these experiences to get unique results, that surprise and excite everyone he works with: "all those projects have taught me a lot, like to work super fast from working for huge companies like Coca-cola, or to be super organized from working with film companies, to be experimental and open from working with bands, to listen very carefully and communicate effectively from working with orchestras, to always be prepared and having a backup plan from recording live theater and musicals"

His obsession for getting the best out of music has led him to experiment with new techniques and formats that broaden the artistic possibilities and enhance the listener's experience. "I'm very passionate about great written music, high-quality audio, and technology that enables us to experience art in new ways. That's why I'm always learning and developing my craft. Dolby Atmos is an example of this, I've been working in this format for aro

I worked with Sebastian and he's an excellent Producer and Mixing Engineer. The Workflow was really good and one of the most remarkable characteristics from Sebastian is that he listens to what you have to say and then he proposes an idea, which are really musical, but if you do disagree he gives you alternatives until you are really happy with the end result. I can recommend Sebastian 100% having worked with him side by side.

Sebastian is a great producer and sound engineer! I work together for over 1 1/2 year with him and hopefully in the future as well. He is not only well trained, it’s also his refreshing mindset and alternatively ideas, which makes recording and working with him a great experience!

Interview with Sebastian Rojas Baquero

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: Not easy to choose, but I'm really proud of the band I'm developing (Raw Kids), great music, lovely people and they have improve so much! I've been working with them on the production, recording and mixing.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I'm mixing different projects, working on the production of a VR project and developing some learning modules on audio engineering for the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service).

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Not yet.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Both are great. No reason to do just one.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: I'll work till the client is happy with the results.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: I love working on new music.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: They ask often, how should they deliver the files? the answer really depend of the level of expertise the client has with the DAW. I ask normally for a wet and dry version, all sounds and effects that are integral to the track should stay. If the client isn't very comfortable with the DAW I would just ask for the session.

  15. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  16. A: I always ask for the goal of the project, what are the aesthetics of the record? who do you want to reach? are there references for the music or the sound? are there deadlines?

  17. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  18. A: Laptop, speakers, an interface, a mic and a guitar.

  19. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  20. A: I bring an objective perspective and a lot of ideas. Always with respect I try to give every song an unique sound by combining different influences from different genres.

  21. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  22. A: Tell the provider as much as you can about your vision and give also context like other music you like. We just want to understand what you like! because at the end of the day is your music and we want you to be proud of it.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I started doing live sound when I was 16yo, then started to get interested on the recording side of music and started to learn by myself. After the school I went to the university and started studying music and sound engineering, after 1 year and a half I decided to go to Austria and continue studying there. Parallel to learning german I continue working on studios and trying to develop projects; started to study in Vienna but I quickly realized that Vienna wasn't the city for me. I moved to Berlin (where I currently reside) in 2017 and continue my studies, I kept working on live sound for music and theater, working as freelancer on studios and with bands producing music. End of 2017 I started working as sound engineer in one of the most important theater in Berlin, the Maxim Gorki Theater. During the last 3 years I have finished my studies, worked with great local bands (recording, producing, developing, mixing and some times mastering), worked on sound and music for TV and now Im working on a the music for a VR film!

  25. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  26. A: Well my dream since I was 12 was always to work with Paul McCartney. I just love his music and his voice (even now) He has an amazing sensibility for music !

  27. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  28. A: I'm not a beatmaker!! haha If you want to work with me as a producer I'll be arranging, playing instruments, experimenting with sounds, coaching you with performance with lyrics, I'll record you and if you want it I'll mix the songs too.

  29. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  30. A: As a musician I feel inspired by people like Jack White, U2, D'Angelo, Manu Chao, Meridian Brothers, Charlie Garcia, The Divine Comedy, Snarky Puppy among others. There are a lot of engineers/producers I respect like Sylvia Massy, Tchad Blake, Eric Valentine, Nigel Godrich, Phil Ramone, Greg Wells, etc...

  31. Q: How would you describe your style?

  32. A: I like to think myself as a very flexible person, that said, I like crunchy sounds, distortions brings up the characteristics of normal sounds in a very unique way.

  33. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  34. A: Timing, timing, timing. Moving stuff back and forward just a bit, makes a lot of difference, can make basses sound fatter, vocals more punchy and in general create clarity.

  35. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  36. A: I like and work on all kinds of music styles but I feel strong connection for music created with real instruments. I love recording drums and bands and I get to do it often enough.

  37. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  38. A: I would say my strongest skill is my passion for experimenting with sounds.

  39. Q: What's your typical work process?

  40. A: I really believe the most important is performance, as a producer I will try to get the best performance from the artist and propose tips and ideas to help us get there. When I'm mixing I take the same approach, I start by editing, moving things just a little, I try to make your performance tighter or looser depending of the music, micro timing adjustment can improve the sound dramatically! after that is ready I start balancing and panning, followed by processing using different tools to give it character, excitement and making space for all the elements on the mix.

  41. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  42. A: I work mainly in the box, but I still enjoy going out of it for reamping sources, using spring reverbs and saturation devices. My main monitors are a pair of Focal three way speakers, that help me take decisions very accurately, I reference in smaller systems like the Reftone mix-cubes, boomboxes and a variety of headphones.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: I do from production to master. I advice my clients about song form, arrangement, performance, sounds and if wanted I will help them to realise it. Recording I will set up every thing to get great sounds and experiment in the process in order to create unique, differentiating tones. During Mixing I do my best to enhance the original intention of the record and take it to where you want it to go.
