Mixing and Mastering

Diogo Guedes on SoundBetter

- Latin Grammy winning engineer and producer who's worked with Lenine, Maria Gadú, Maria Bethania, Eek-a-Mouse, etc. - I'll edit, tune, mix and master your song!

- I do remote mixing and mastering from my personal studio in São Paulo, BR.
- In the music business since 2002, mixing professionally since 2007.
- My musical background ranges from pop, to classical, to rock, to hip-hop, singers/songwriters, folk music, jazz, instrumental, and dub/reggae!
- I mix almost entirely in-the-box, but I do have a few hardware compressors and preamps for spicing up tracks and my delay throws and effects are done using hardware delays with an external controller for automating rides.
- My room is fairly well-treated, quite dry, and I use Genelec 8040b monitors and Yamaha NS10s, as well as Beyerdynamic and Audio-Technica headphones as references.
- The client is able to listen to the session in real-time via streaming.

Interview with Diogo Guedes

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I was the recording engineer for the album Lenine - Em Transito. It was special because it was the first time I got nominated for a Latin Grammy, and we won!!! I'm super proud of that, even though awards are not my main driving force.

  3. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  4. A: Digital for the flexibility and affordability.

  5. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  6. A: I'll give something that YOU will like. I try not to please the audience, but the artist.

  7. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  8. A: Making music happen, and helping careers take off.

  9. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  10. A: That no formal training is needed.

  11. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  12. A: Where do you think this music will be played at? Clubs, festivals, JBL boomboxes? Who do you think you sound like?

  13. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  14. A: Macbook, headphones, and a good interface. I only need 3.

  15. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  16. A: I've playing guitar professionally since 2002, and I have been mixing professionally since 2007. Before that I would work in my own projects as an engineer.

  17. Q: How would you describe your style?

  18. A: Forward, wide, bass-heavy.

  19. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  20. A: I'd love to do a session with Kendrick Lamar.

  21. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  22. A: All kinds.

  23. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  24. A: Mixing, for sure.

  25. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  26. A: I try to bring out what strikes me the most when I listen to it the first time. I tend to make an image in my head, make up a visual scenery and then mix from that.

  27. Q: What's your typical work process?

  28. A: I tipically listen in various references to make sure music can translate in every playback situation.

  29. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  30. A: Minimal approach to gear. To me it's all about human touch.

  31. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  32. A: Andrew Scheps, Jaycen Joshua, Greg Wells, Dr Dre.

  33. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  34. A: I do mainly mixing and mastering, but I also produce and play the guitar as a professional musician.
