Interview with James Kaye

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: My most recent release the COCONUT EP is one of my most prized projects I've worked on to date because of the attention to detail we put into it. 7 songs that tell a story and capture a different feeling all within the same vibe. If you listen to it I would love to hear what you think!

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Currently working on soundtrack type records for placement! As well as always of course working on records with project clients and creating records for my artistry.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Yes. Kadis (producer) Big Duke (producer) Micky Shiloh (Songwriter) and probably plenty more.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Digital, for now.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: You will always get more than you pay for.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: I love working with people and creating excitement.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: Nothing really comes to mind... But I think what a lot of customers ask themselves before doing business with someone is will I get the value that I want out of this relationship. My goal is to work with people for a long time, and not on a one off basis. I'm more interested in relationships than transactions.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: I think people may think because I don't play instruments or physically produce a lot of my own records, that I don't know production. But your boy can CRAFT records! I'm very hands on in the production process and that's what creates my sound.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: I always want to know what your over arching goal is. Both for this project and over all. If this project isn't getting you closer to that, then why are you doing it?

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Always schedule a call or in person meeting if you can. Catch a vibe first and go with your gut.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: Mac book with pro-tools and a lot of plug ins. Microphone Midi Key board acoustic Guitar and margarita maker

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I've been casually making music for about 10 years, and serioulsy for the last 5. As an artist, I booked my own concerts, did my own marketing and got my self to a point where I was working with artists out of town and performing all over California. After moving to Los Angeles 3 years ago, my long time friend / producer and I opened a recording studio in North Hollywood and really started to hone our skills as producers and songwriters.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: Chill, tropical, good vibes. But also a lot of Soul.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: I would love to work with Kehlani because I love her topics, her melodies, and she always has the coolest vocal layers / back ups.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Find the magic of your song... The part that makes your energy spike. Then figure out a way to get to that part of the song quicker and more often.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: I love working on RnB / Pop / Chill EDM and also work with a lot of rappers.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: I've been told I have a great feel for arrangement, both production and melody wise, and know how to find the magic in a song.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I pride myself on having uniqe ideas to make the song move and feel more full. I always ask the question, how can we take this record further?

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: I love to get in and work with artists directly. We usually set up a session at our studio to just hang and catch a vibe before ever working together.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: We have a two room set up, fully sound-proofed equipped with a professional vocal booth and the Slate VMS mic. Clients love the relaxed and comfortable vibe of our room and our legendary vocal chain.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: I'm greatly inspired by my peers and those who work closely with me in my studio. Some of my biggest inspirations in the music industry are producer / writers like Pharell, Dr. Dre, and Louis Bell.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: I love working with artists directly in our recording studio building records from scratch to dial in everything from mood, key, tempo, feel of the song and lyrical direction.
