Interview with Audiography

  1. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  2. A: I've been a professional engineer for 15 years.

  3. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  4. A: I end up working on a lot of rock music, as that is what I create as an artist. However, I also find myself mixing heaps of Americana and music rich with acoustic instruments.

  5. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  6. A: Empathy.

  7. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  8. A: Attention to detail. Perspective. Poetic lyrics. Power of story.

  9. Q: What's your typical work process?

  10. A: I like to start with a conversation with the content creator. From there we develop a common set of references and priorities to base our listening off of. When working on a film, I watch through the piece and absorb it for what it is. Then I ask questions about what motivates the sound and how to draw the most out of the story. After that, I get a team together and/or compose a schedule of how the work will get done. For music, if possible, I like to hear the song acoustically first, straight from the songwriter's hands and mouth. Starting from the song in its purest form, I then help the artist expand and realize the production through instrumentation and experimentation. Once we're in the mix, I zoom into the details to make every possible sound count for all it's worth.

  11. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  12. A: My studio is my temple. I have a calibrated 5.1 mix space that mimics a small theater, and sounds great for music. The space is acoustically treated to reject outside noise very well, and tuned for the most accurate listening environment possible.

  13. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  14. A: I'm inspired by Ben Burtt, Nigel Godrich, and Rick Rubin. They are the best at what they do, and I aspire to be the same.

  15. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  16. A: I do mostly Audio Post for film and television, as well as mixing and mastering for commercial music tracks.
