Gavin Brooks specializes in a holistic approach to record creation that honors the process from the beginning to end. Thinking with extreme metal and DAW workflows in mind for over a decade, Gavin provides a unique perspective to metal record production, stemming from his extensive experience in sound design in an electronic music production context. Gavin embodies the philosophy that the mixing process can become an extension of sound design, or creating the sound palette, when in the right hands. While some restraint should never be overlooked, other engineers from the conventional band-mixing school of thought are at a disadvantage by not knowing just how far post-production processing and mixing techniques can be pushed. And it is for this same reason that conventional engineers aren't aware when they go too far on techniques like drum replacement and compression -- leaving the mix sounding slightly flat and modern. Despite being a fan of abusing modern tools, Gavin is primarily concerned in preserving an energetic and 'full of life' sound; to create records that feel like they were performed and written by people, even if they were meticulously assembled on computers and performed with drum machines.
