Robbie Malone on SoundBetter

I've played on Multi-million selling records - Recorded with World-renowned Producers- 5 Star reviews - Toured the world many times - Credits include: David Gray, The Corrs, Hothouse Flowers and many more. Hello lovely people. I'm here to try and make your song sound as great as possible. I will put my heart and soul into every take..promise

• I have been a professional musician for over 30 years, so playing and producing many styles and techniques is always a joy. I have recorded countless records over the years, literally, I've lost count.
I'm also lecturing at the BIMM University in Dublin, where I teach Studio Musicianship/Production to bass players on the degree course.
My main gig is as bassist to English musician David Gray. I have been performing, recording, co-writing and producing with David for 20 years now.

• I have also been fortunate enough to work with some top producers too including, Sir George Martin, T Bone Burnett, Marius de Fries (Bjork, Madonna) Iestyn Polson (David Bowie, Patty Smith) Phil Brown (Led Zepplin, Talk,Talk). Chris Thomas (The Beatles, Inxs, Pretenders). These guys have helped me hone my craft and enabled me to play Bass for the song.

• Bass- I will deliver two different creative takes within 2 days. These will include, 1 di clean version and 1 amped version for each track. These options will help you feel how I hear the bass within the track.

Production- Again, I will add everything you need to the track(s) as I'm a multi-instrumentalist, but I will focus on how YOU want the track(s) to feel.

Terrific experience working with Robbie. He was extremely diligent in delivering a bass track that complimented my song "Nowhere Maze" beautifully. Pleasure to work with and I would enlist Robbie's talents again in a heartbeat.

Interview with Robbie Malone

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I recorded bass on a record with 'The Corrs' in the UK and TBone Burnett produced it. That 3 weeks were so memorable for so many reasons. He is a hero of mine, so it was wonderful to work so closely with him.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: A record with a Songwriter from New Zealand. Its such a lovely experience. Im touring there in 2022 so Im looking forward to meeting the guy......lol.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Im new here, so, sorry, not really.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: For now, digital. As a remote session player its the way to go....

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: That they will be really happy with my bassline. 9/10 they will come back with more songs for me to play on. Im easy going and will make it work for them...

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: Music is my life, its a dream to be able to do this every day as a living.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: Whats David Gray like to work with? Answer- A dream. I get so much freedom, it's a beautiful thing.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: That playing bass is an easy job. The bass is the floor, its never noticed until it's gone.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: If the style is not mentioned in the brief, I will ask for that and for them NOT to send the demo bass, that's always a complete red herring. lol...

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Don't be afraid to ask for revisions. Sometimes you can get more out of your session musician than you think.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: Macbook pro/ Apollo Arrow/ Fender P/ acoustic gtr/ Headphones

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I've been playing music professionally since I left school 32 years ago. That's been my path.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: Soulful .........

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: It was always Prince, but sadly that dream is over.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Send clean, non-clipped Wavs to a client.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: Mostly Singersongwriters send me tracks, but i get all sorts of projects from funk to rock. Its a joy to play bass on any music.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: That I play for the song and fit around the vocal melody and rhythm.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: Simplistic and creative lines that will be to a really high standard.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: I get the track, work on it for the day and send back 2 versions. You then get the option of 2 revisions to mould the line how you like it. I'll then send on clean wavs and some versions with some tight plugins that will sit perfectly in your mix.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: My home set-up is simple but effective. I use Logicx through an Apollo interface, that's all you need with the quality from UAD Unison plugins. I have lots of Fenders, Lakeland and NS basses, so variety is not a problem.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: I'm a big fan of the classic players like McCartney and Jamerson, but I also like Thundercat and Leonard "Hub" Hubbard.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: I will deliver a high-end bass line for your song. This will include revisions as you need them. Having a creative line that sits in the track and lets the vocal breathe is sooo important.
