Aidan Lowe on SoundBetter

I'm an Australian drummer living in Berlin, tracking drums at my own purpose-built private studio, Lumen Studio Berlin. I approach client's music from a producer's perspective - creating unique drum sounds specially tailored to your music.

Lumen Studio Berlin was purpose-built to allow producers and artists to get live drums on their songs, without the expense and time associated with traditional studio hire and setup.

I offer flexibility and a fast turnaround, creating more opportunities to have a living breathing musician on songs instead of programmed or looped samples.

I create completely unique, original sounds and parts tailored to each track after discussions with the artist/producer, working with acoustic drums / percussion / programming.

I contribute my own ideas for production, overdubs and effects as the song requires, and send separate raw and processed stems to my clients to use as they please.

I'm tracking in a tight, acoustically treated space with high end Neve and API-style analog preamps & EQ's, high end conversion from Cranborne Audio and a locker of mics you'd expect to find in any great studio.

I have over 20 years experience as a full-time professional musician in Australia and Europe.

Aidan is the best drummer I've ever worked with! He can play anything and everything. He thinks melodically and plays for the big picture, while having some of the most insane chops I've ever seen! Strongly recommend.

Aidan provided the drums for a cover track I am recording.
He is a very talented, skilled, open minded and hard working musician and his drums really brought the track to life. Very smooth delivery and easy to communicate with. Highly recommended! Thanks again Aidan

I've happily worked with Aidan on a number of projects. He's always looking to contribute to the beauty of the whole picture, by making careful and tasteful choices. When it comes to both his playing and the recording/producing process. And above all he is a sweetheart and it's super nice to work with him.

Interview with Aidan Lowe

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I'm really proud of my work with Baby Smith - this was one of the first artists that recorded their entire album in my studio space - drums, bass, piano, guitars, vocals, percussion, violin even some woodwinds. I played drums and engineered the record and I was so happy to be involved from start to finish with this one!

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I'm working to improve my mixing chops and move into producing artists. Love to nerd out on music!

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Paul Santner! Amazing musician and friend.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: both!

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: My #1 priority is for you to get tracks that you're stoked to listen to! If you're not 100% happy with my work, I will keep working until you are.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: I get to wake up and help other musicians with my creativity!

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: Q: Hey man, do you have brushes? A: I've got a drawer full of hundreds of different implements to hit a drum with :D

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: That live drums should sound like sampled drums.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: Just the usual stuff: it's all about their aesthetic and where they want their drums to sit.

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: I love it when clients have a clear musical goal in mind - but offer me the flexibility to find the best strategy to achieve it. Help me help you; stay open and maybe we can together make something far better than either of us could accomplish on our own.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: My trusty vintage Supraphonic would have to come; that snare does everything! The 60's Ludwig Superclassic set would join because they just go together so well. AGOP cymbals for everything. Coles 4038's. And then... a 57. I could use it for hunting.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: Drums? 25 years and counting. Studio – 7 years so far.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: I can play a range of styles but I definitely adore: dynamics, tone, and a light touch.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: I love working with anyone who's honestly putting their heart into their craft.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Music is built up of contrasts. Keep things moving in the arrangement and don't be afraid to push individual elements to extremes.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: A lot of singer-songwriters and indie music with organic sounds. Lots of RnB and hiphop. with a twist of jazz!

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: Listening.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I try to always play for the music and the song, bringing some life and energy in without overbearing or playing too aggressive. I try to start with simple concepts and allow the lead vocal to shine. I love Ringo!

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: Typically I ask the client for their demos, and any references they can give me for the drum sound, the vibe and energy level and groove ideas. We talk through what the goal is with the live drum recording and then I make it happen!

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: This space is custom built for drums, a dry space absolutely packed with vintage instruments and recording gear. Drumkits everywhere. I'm running high end pre's and absolutely adore my current mic setup - Soyuz Tube 013 pair, Coles 4038 pair, Beyer M160 pair, Vanguard V13 Tube pair, AEA R84, D12 & 47FET for kick, loads of dynamic mics (vintage D19, M201's galore!). I'm loving a pair of Sennheiser 441's as room mics at the moment - unusual choice but such a vibe!

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: Too many to list! Here's a few I'm loving lately: Ethan Gruska, Sam Evian, Blake Mills, Khruangbin, Adrianne Lenker, Mk.gee, Men I Trust, Mac DeMarco, Ben Howard. but also: Lil Simz, Loyle Carner, Slum Village, MF DOOM, old Outkast, Rosie Lowe, James Blake... I could go on forever. But most of all, I'm inspired every day by my clients' songs! Love my job :)

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: Recording drums for producers and artists!
