Francesco

Mixing & Mastering, Producer

Francesco on SoundBetter

I'm an Italian 22 years old certified mix & mastering engineer and producer. I work in the domain of the discography and cinematics, collaborating with several professional recording studios in Italy as sound engineer, producer, composer and teacher.

My approach to production, mixing and mastering has always been modern, paying particular attention to details and intelligibility. I usually mix and master ITB with the aim of emulating analog sound in every aspect: from the roundness of low frequencies to the 3D top end.

I offer analog-style mixing and mastering, from equalization to compression to summing and limiting, avoiding multiple processings or conversions and providing high quality products.

In every mixing or stem mastering session I always include advanced and spectral editing, voice tuning and time alignment. I usually work at 44,1/48 kHz for mixing and up to 192 kHz for mastering with a bit resolution of 64 bit float.

Interview with Francesco

  1. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  2. A: I'm workin in my studio with some recording sessions, producing "Le Colonne d'Ercole's" new album. I'm also collaborating with the "ProCube studio" in Rome for some productions, mixing and mastering, with the "Diesis Studio/Lizard Academy" in Chiaravalle for Michele Pecora's new album and other productions and with the Studios Academy for the education part.

  3. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  4. A: I prefer digital because it's more immediate and surgical, but I know that analog is more "alive" and characteristic.

  5. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  6. A: I like news, emotions, concentration and precision.

  7. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  8. A: I would bring a Zoom microphone to record some sound design, a laptop for editing it, a small keyboard and an hard disk to compose. No analog processors, in that case I prefer ITB! lol

  9. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  10. A: I have been on the music circuit for 8 years. I started at 13 year old by playing the bass guitar and than I fell in love with audio production and post production so that I decided to make music my life and career.

  11. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  12. A: For a strong and functional production is important to give to each sound or instrument a very specific space in the frequency range, in order to avoid conflicts, fill the gaps and preserve intelligibility. So keep a spectrum analyzer handy and your production will be more functional!

  13. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  14. A: I usually work on pop, rock, indie, trap and electronic songs.

  15. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  16. A: My strongest skills are mixing, mastering and the composing/production ones. During these years I've attended several courses and worked in professional ambiences in order to develop technique and knowloedge.

  17. Q: What's your typical work process?

  18. A: If I start with the mix, I try to reach a good balance before starting editing drums, voices and instruments. After aligning, editing and tuning I start mixing the most influent objects in the song. With mastering I start by correcting errors and anomalies with editing and then adding colour and emphasize transients, without compromising the initial balance and the mix.

  19. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  20. A: I have my own professional studio in Castelraimondo (MC), Italy equipped with UAD Apollo Twin, Yamaha HS5m, Softube Console 1 and an Allen&Heat Qu-16. It is soundproofed and acoustically treated. I also work in other professional studios in Rome and Chiaravalle with analog gear.

  21. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  22. A: As a 22 year old guy, I love modern music with real instruments such as piano, acoustic guitars, drums and percussions melted toghether with synth and hybrid textures.

  23. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  24. A: I usually do mix and mastering, productions and ghost productions for artists and musicians.
