Todd Herfindal Music on SoundBetter

My background is playing guitar and singing in bands. This lens informs how I approach working with other artists. As a music producer, my very first indie-produced album ended up being signed/released by a major label. I've been on a certified Platinum album as a co-writer/guitar on a pop single for the artist Alesha Dixon, Warner/Asylum.

I've been recording/engineering/mastering/mixing indie and major label tracks and albums for a couple decades now. I can just as easily mix your songs or album or cut beautiful background vocals, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, bass, percussion. It's all about ears, years and gear. All 3 of these are necessary and helpful in making great music.
With me you get a talent who can play on your music but also mix, master, edit, comp, tune vocals. Basically I can do anything that is needed in the production process. I’ve also got access to some great LA session players.

Bonus is that I work in my own solar-powered studio, and since I work during the day typically, any work/tracks I do for you will come from the sun. That's why my studio is called "Sun Studio."

Todd did a truly excellent job mastering our tracks for our upcoming release. He was really easy to work with, and we will certainly be repeat customers!

Todd isn't just good. He's smart. He's a player, a writer, an artist, an engineer, and producer, which means he hears things from all those angles. If there's something that isn't right, he hears it and is ready with a fix. If you don't want to fix it, that's fine too.

I cannot recommend him highly enough. - Grant

Todd was fantastic to work with. He gets it done, doesn't mess around, understands the process and has fantastic players to bring in when you need them. LOVED it. Absolutely recommend him.

I first recorded with Todd around 2000 in San Francisco and have been back numerous times since. As a drummer, I always appreciated how much time he was willing to spend to ensure a great drum sound. He understands the subtleties of mic placement and drum tuning as well as the delicate psychology that is sometimes required to coax out that stellar take.
I have also had the pleasure of watching Todd working with other band members and am always amazed at his depth of knowledge on guitars and vocals in particular.
Todd is the ultimate professional but always manages to make it fun too

Long time client here. Todd brings great sounds, great vibes and a steady hand on the faders at all times. He's long been a trusted "go-to guy" in LA for authentic, well-crafted sonics and music direction that favors the song over everything (as his credits attest). He has an ear for melody, a stellar black book of players (himself among them) and a proven method to his madness for creating tracks that play perfectly on soundtracks, television shows and radio. His hand-built recording and mastering rig, combined with his hand-built recording room, really delivers the goods. Highly recommend!

I've been working with Todd for a little over a year. He was recommended by a friend for some mastering I needed done on a handful of songs. Todd did an excellent job on the mastering--the songs sounded amazing!

I also worked with Todd on some vocal tracks I needed done on a song. The recording went incredibly well. Todd's studio is great! And so is Todd! The vibe of the studio is very relaxed, so it was a great experience recording with him. I'm planning on going back to Todd's studio to record some new songs.

I've worked with Todd for years and I can say that he is one of my favorite producers! One of the key things about Todd is that he makes the artist feel super relaxed and comfortable in the studio. He has a lot of enthusiasm with your ideas and is able to help you create the best music that is inside of you. I cannot wait to record with him again.

A lot of producers and engineers have technical skills and gear but Todd Herfindal has all of that plus miles of vibe! He truly loves what he does and always serves the Song. Todd has recorded and produced a half dozen of my projects over the past 18 years and I was blessed to have his patience, skill and ears leading the pre-production, recording, mixing, mastering etc. No matter if we were working remotely across the globe or working for 8 hours straight in his Studio, Todd was always present, listening and providing honest/constructive feedback. He will help you bring your songs to life.

It is my great pleasure to endorse Todd as an engineer/producer (but that's not all; see below). You see, with Todd you are getting so much more than world-class audio production know-how, gear, results, etc. Because he is a top notch musician/guitarist/singer/songwriter/multiinstrumentalist himself (so, hire him for any/all of those things too), you are benefitting from his amazing ear and creativity. AND you get all that with positively no B.S. but rather with overflowing genuine positivity, hospitality, and just generally great vibe. Go with Todd. You won't regret it.

Working with Todd is 110% magic. Not only do you get an exemplary product, but he makes the entire process of creating a complete dream. A multi-instrumentalist and a performer himself, Todd knows exactly what it takes to fulfill any creators vision and always approaches projects with the highest integrity. He handles each project with care, integrity and speed. He has the know-how on every aspect from the technical to the creative. I have worked with Todd for over 8 years and he continues to amaze me with his talent. My number one pick for producing/mixing/mastering/guitars for any project.

Interview with Todd Herfindal Music

  1. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  2. A: Bevin. She's a great go-to if you need some fantastic rock-oriented, emotive lead or background vocals. She can be bluesy, blistering or anthemic. She's always prepared, creative and quick. A great soul to work with.

  3. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  4. A: You'll love the work.

  5. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  6. A: The music of course and the satisfaction of doing a great job for my clients.

  7. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  8. A: That I only do one thing, like Oh "he's a mastering engineer" or "tracking engineer". The reality is I'm a music producer. These days, a Producer should be able to mic a drum kit (or program drums) as well as master or mix.

  9. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  10. A: Enthusiasm and a real desire to make the recording/song as great as it can possibly be

  11. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  12. A: A 450 Sq Ft. live room, adjacent control room. Mics: Neumann M149 Tube Mic. Such a killer on vocals/drums. I've also got the Neumann M147, slightly darker and great on some voices and drums. 2 Neumann KM 184s for drum overheads and so sweet on acoustic guitar. 2 Sennheiser 421s, great on Toms and guitar cabinets. Some Pre Amps are Pacifica, Vintech 473, Drawmer, Universal Audio 4-710. Eventide Eclipse, great vocal FX unit. Guitars: Gibson ES 335 and SG. Tele, Rickenbacker 360, Gretsch Electromatic. 74" Slingerland drums (red-white-blue). Also so got some killer drum software. DAW: Pro Tools/Mac.

  13. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  14. A: How do you envision this production to sound like? What are your goals?

  15. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  16. A: Be as clear as you can about what you'd like me to do for your recording. Have goals for what you'd like to get from the session(s) we do together.

  17. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  18. A: Gibson ES 335, Neumann M149, Pacifica pre, Drawmer 1969 Compressor/pre, Eventide Eclipse.

  19. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  20. A: I never thought of it as a career until 20 years went by. Been fighting the good fight for at least that long now.

  21. Q: How would you describe your style?

  22. A: I like letting great musicians do their thing. I tend to bring over-arching or big picture ideas to the party for bands/artists to consider, whether it's arrangement-oriented, textures or sonics.

  23. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  24. A: Keep your mind open.

  25. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  26. A: Indie rock, rock,pop-rock, Americana, country, alt. country, folk. I've also worked on electronic music now and again.

  27. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  28. A: Loving my job.

  29. Q: What's your typical work process?

  30. A: It would depend greatly on the task at hand, but it starts with listening to the music and talking to the client about their vision.

  31. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  32. A: Mastering, mixing and tracking vocals or drums. With the versatile audio sweetening tools available now, mastering is the last opportunity (in the recording chain) to actually improve upon a mix. Recording live drums and tracking vocals are all what I would consider to be lost arts, where you marry the technical to the creative. Mixing is a taste issue that’s partly determined by the client’s desires and by the song/recording itself.
