Interview with The Robot Cave Audio Lab

  1. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  2. A: My own songs, which is literally a mix of every genre just about from traditional county to rock.

  3. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  4. A: Jb and the Moonshine bands albums. These albums paved the road for me and opened my eyes to see that if you put your heart in to something, follow your gut, and stay humble and honest... Great things will happen! The sky is the limit!

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Not at the moment, I'm sure I'll run across some comrades soon!

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Both are great, they have their pros and cons... They are all tools. You use them just like a carpenter would use a hammer and you are done. I use both.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: To give them the best I can give. That is my life motto as well as the golden rule.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: That I am doing what I absolutely love for a living and that my wife and family support me.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: How much will this cost? Answer: how much ya got!? Haha I kid, I kid.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: The biggest misconception is that i am like everyone else and use midi drums and that I rush things out of the door. (At least this is a perceived misconception, no one has ever said this to me) why? Because I typically have a quick turnaround.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: What is the time frame? Full production or demos? Do you need studio musicians? How many songs?

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Know your songs as well as the tempo and send it to me then Let's make a hit record.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: MacBook Pro, my small Focusrite, Midi drums, my Taylor Acoustic, bass guitar, a Shure sm57,

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I am a touring drummer for 8 years. Spending about 175 days on the road and many off days in studios perfecting our (Jb and the Moonshine Band) albums, I have an unquenching thirst to make great music.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: Unique. I use technical aspects of all genres and marry them into a masterpiece.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: Dave Pensado, we are similar in many ways I think and I honestly believe we would hit it off and make a hit record most importantly, having fun doing it.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Don't crowd the mix box

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: Country and Rock and Roll.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: Mixing, Production and Drum Tracking.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I bring life to a song, whether it be industry quality or indie, I am well versed and pour my heart and soul into my work.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: Typically, the artist sends me scratch tracks and I lay down drums (and other instruments if necessary as I have in house studio musicians second to none on hand) and I produce, and mix the song. I will then send it back to the buyer and they will lay down vocal tracks, send 3 takes of those back to me and I mix and master the track!

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: I have a somewhat modest setup with a Focusrite board, Universal Audio Analog outboard gear such as the industry standard LA-610 mk-ii, API 550, and other various waves plugins. Daw is Protools 10-12

  42. A: Musicians that inspire me are, Dave Grohl, Ozzy Osbourne, Dave Navarro, Keith Whitley, George Strait, Roger Waters, Tom Petty, Miles Davis, Ryan Adams, Don Henley and many more. Music Production Pros that inspire me are Rick Rubin, Glyn Johns, and Dave Pensado.
