Dan Stein

Upright and Electric Bass

Dan Stein on SoundBetter

I'm a Juilliard-trained jazz bass player with experience and interest in many genres. My 10+ years of experience as a professional on the NYC jazz scene has taught me to handle pretty much any music that's thrown my way, and to bring my own voice and creativity to any project. I aim to serve the music, however simple or complex.

I feel privileged to a true New Yorker, born and raised in Hells Kitchen artist housing among some of the finest musicians and performing artists on the planet. I started gigging in high school, then went on to study at the Oberlin Conservatory and got my masters from the Juilliard School in jazz bass performance. I am extremely lucky to have studied with some of the greats, including Ron Carter and Ray Drummond. In addition to my jazz training, I have always relished the opportunity to play all different types of music--soul, rock, r&b, folk, indie, americana, musical theater, chamber/orchestral music, new music etc. I don't believe in genres, and approach my bass playing the same way whether I'm playing swing at Jazz at Lincoln Center, rock at the Bowery Ballroom, funk/pop at Groove, or avante garde music at the Stone--the bass always serves the same function--support, groove, harmonic foundation, and to be a "melody beneath the melody."

I have extensive experience in the studio, recording for artists and commercial music, and over the years have learned that producing a fantastic bass sound (upright or electric) that sits in the mix is a slightly different skill than performing live. I've built my home recording setup in a dedicated, acoustically treated room with some fantastic gear that provides clear, rich, and dynamic sounding bass both upright and electric.
