Chris had helped me in the mixing process of a single I was working on, he was one the key people that could make tangible my idea into a song.

Chris has been an indispensable part of many of my projects, from top quality mixing and mastering (where his professionalism and punctuality has been rock solid) to a variety of creative collaborations. Once again his influence in both production and songwriting has been top tier. To top it off he's a great guy and always a pleasure to work with. I highly recommend Chris as both an audio engineer and for his creative input.

Whoa, this guy is good! He mixed a track for me that I had sounding terrible and turned it around, very quickly I might add, to sounding great! What was muddy, he made clear. It was a hard rock song, and he really knew what he was doing and how to make my favourite sections stand out. Great guy, and I highly recommend!

Chris is an excellent producer with a detailed ear who works across a span of genres and always delivers fantastic tracks back to you. He is quick to respond and also brings personal insight and expertise to your songs. Not only has he personally produced music for me, but he's taken the time to educate me on vocal mixing, which means a lot to independent, smaller artists. Can't recommend Chris enough! Will be back to work with him soon.

I have worked with about ten mix master engineers over the years running a small label here in California. Chris really helped us a ton. Not only in treating our parts, but is some instances creating parts to complete the songs. His dedication goes beyond engineering. He genuinely wants his clients to walk knowing their vision is understood, respected, and delivered with excellence.

Chris was a pleasure to work with. I had the challenging task to try something new with a project in a different genre and Chris was able to walk me through The whole process. He was extremely professional and knowledgeable in all of my mixing needs. He responded quickly and I was surprised to see my mix back the very same day. I would highly recommend Chris for any mixing needs!

Interview with Chris McAllister

  1. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  2. A: Katie Rae (vocals). She is EXCELLENT!

  3. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  4. A: When can we start?

  5. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  6. A: Many artists think mixing and mastering also includes production, which it does not. I take all of the tracks already recorded as is and turn them into a cohesive work of art. I expect that all tracks arrive fully produced and ready to go.

  7. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  8. A: What's your vision? What are you looking for in the mix? What are you hoping I bring to the table in the mix? What reference tracks do you have?

  9. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  10. A: Faderport 16 console, DT 990 Pro X headphones, and three analog-modeled plugins: UAD LA2A, SSL 4000E, Seventh Heaven Reverb.

  11. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  12. A: I started off as a public school music teacher and now have been a mixing engineer for many years!

  13. Q: How would you describe your style?

  14. A: My style is whatever serves the music. If the song needs aggression, it gets it. If it needs a more mellow feel, I apply it.

  15. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  16. A: Linkin' Park, Avril Lavigne, Elton John, Eagles. All of them have excellent music and unique songs that would be absolutely fun to mix!

  17. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  18. A: Capture the best source recording you can. That makes the mix sound so much better when less processing has to be applied to fix recording issues.

  19. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  20. A: Rock, Alt Rock, Pop Rock, Heavy Rock, Singer-Songwriter are my focus genres. I love mixing in various genres!

  21. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  22. A: An excellent ear, pride in excellent artist satisfaction through communication and service, and ability to solve problems in the mix.

  23. Q: What's your typical work process?

  24. A: I first communicate with the artist to get their vision for the piece. I'll listen to the rough demo and get reference tracks to see where the artist is hoping to go with it. After, I'll receive all of the tracks, organize them in the DAW, and get the faders up on the board to get it sounding like a song. Then, I'll begin precision processing to get the absolute best sounds out of every track and allow each track to breathe and sit nicely with each other. I constantly A/B my mix with the rough demo with intentions of matching the original artist intent and improving upon it.

  25. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  26. A: CLA, Andy Wallace, Andrew Scheps.

  27. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  28. A: I provide premium mixing and mastering services for artists worldwide.

  29. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  30. A: I'm currently the lead engineer for 'Epic The Musical: The Journey Continues". It's very fun to work with so many talented musicians!

  31. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  32. A: It's a new song every day. And that's what I love about this job!

  33. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  34. A: Digital with analogue vibes. I'm a 100% in the box engineer but utilize a ton of analogue-style plugins to give the same character found on songs recorded in completely analogue studios. Digital is substantially easier for both the engineer and the client (no recall sheets, easy revisions!) and the sound is very similar.

  35. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  36. A: You will be 100% completely happy with your song by the time of completion, or you pay nothing. My mission since I started mixing is that my clients should never have to 'settle' on a song that's only 'OK'. If it doesn't gel with you, I didn't do my job.

  37. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  38. A: I get to live my passion every single day.

  39. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  40. A: Hiring a mixing engineer is not just hiring for an open position. Sure, many can get your song sounding good. But to really make the song really come alive, the engineer must really get and understand the artist and the song. Make sure to speak with a few engineers and see who vibes with you the most!

  41. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  42. A: Passion. Music has been my identity for over 30 years. I live and breathe music every single day. I absolutely love new music. I will do everything in my ability to make the song convey the intention of the artist.

  43. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  44. A: My private studio includes two JBL 308 monitors with matching 310s subwoofer. Alongside those I use high quality Sterling S452 headphones. The two of these listening environments allow me to mix for both vibe and intimacy. I both Pro Tools and Reaper with a dual monitor setup for increased workflow. Finally, I use the Presonus Faderport 16 control surface.
