Interview with Juan Cerro

  1. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  2. A: I love transforming an artist’s vision into a fully realized track through close collaboration. Recently, I worked on a Latin-Electronic song where I created an energetic arrangement and added sax solos that elevated the vibe. The best part of my job is shaping a song into something unique and memorable, constantly pushing creative boundaries with every project.

  3. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  4. A: I specialize in Latin, Pop, Hip Hop, Alternative, Rock, RnB, and Electronic music. These genres are where I feel most at home, but I thrive on challenges and love exploring new sounds and styles. Every project, no matter the genre, is an opportunity for me to push my creative boundaries and deliver something unique. I'm always excited to work on projects that might fall outside my usual scope, as they allow me to bring fresh ideas and perspectives to the table.

  5. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  6. A: I excel at crafting saxophone parts that fit seamlessly with the desired vibe, whether through playing pre-composed parts or improvising to enhance the energy of the song. In addition to sax, I’m skilled at writing catchy hooks and toplines that resonate with listeners. As a producer, I bring a keen understanding of how to shape a song’s sound from start to finish. Whether it’s creating the perfect arrangement or delivering a high-quality final mix, I’m committed to helping artists realize their musical ideas and taking their tracks to the next level. My goal is always to deeply understand the artist’s vision and implement it in a way that feels authentic and impactful.

  7. Q: What's your typical work process?

  8. A: I start each project by understanding the artist’s vision and specific goals for the track. For production, I review the demo, whether it’s a simple vocal with guitar or piano, and build a polished, fully produced arrangement in Pro Tools, Ableton Live, or Logic Pro. For saxophone sessions, I can perform parts you’ve composed, either by ear or from sheet music, or I can improvise riffs and solos that seamlessly match the track’s vibe and energy. Throughout the process, communication is key. I provide regular updates and ensure quick turnaround times with revisions as needed to guarantee the final product aligns perfectly with your vision and exceeds expectations.

  9. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  10. A: I play a Selmer Series III saxophone, known for its rich tone, and record with high-quality gear including an Avantone CV-12 BLA microphone, Shure NT5 condensers, and a Universal Audio interface, all in my acoustically treated studio. I work in Pro Tools, Ableton Live, and Logic Pro for a flexible workflow. For guitars, I use a Gibson J-45 and a PRS Silver Sky in Rosewood for versatile, clear sound.

  11. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  12. A: Most of my clients hire me for full music productions as well as saxophone sessions.

  13. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  14. A: My Biggest inspiration is Pharrell Williams and Max Martin. Both have managed to stay relevant for many years and adapted to current trends and relevant topics in the music industry all along with maintaining the highest possible quality in their music.
