Interview with JVB Sound Off!
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: 36 Chambers Forever: my bucket list collab project I did with members of the Wu-Tang Clan. I got to rap with some of the best to ever do it and produce a few of the beats. It was epic - go check it out!
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Three albums for sync music: boom bap hip hop beats, hybrid horror trailer music, and weird/trippy pop instrumentals
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Assuming there is no power: I'll take a cajon, djembe, vibraphone, acoustic guitar, and a crystal singing bowl.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I've been writing and recording songs plus playing keyboard and singing for thirty years. I started pursuing it professionally two decades ago, releasing albums and performing live across the USA. Now I work as a producer, composer, and recording artist. Also starting to focus on sync music more.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: A love of many genres, trained ears, and over two decades of experience on all sides (songwriting, producing, and performance)
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Mike Patton, Rza/Wu Tang, Portishead, John Carpenter, Danny Elfman, KMFDM, Midnight Syndicate, Nox Arcana, Switchblade Symphony, Tech N9ne, Bjork, The Crystal Method, Thievery Corporation, Enigma, etc.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Connecting with other people through the universal language of music
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Sykophunk = it's a crazy mix, but it will move you
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: A wide range of influences and the experience of experimenting with diverse sounds that create unexpected magic together
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Outside-the-box beats for rappers, vocalists, and musicians. Cinematic soundtracks for visual media. Soothing ambient instrumentals for meditation, relaxation, and healing.
