I knew I needed melody and lyric help, but after being burned so many times I was skeptical. I found Julia's profile and loved her samples. I gave her some samples and what I deem a "brain dump" and said "lmk what calls to you" which is very unlike me because I am a control freak. First thing she sent back was everything I wanted and more. The melody was absolutely addictive, it had the swag but approachable vocal I wanted and more. 1000000/10 recommend Julia!

Julia Ross, literally gods gift to mankind in her not only her voice, but her energy and presence. She was always quick to respond to any questions and concerns, and she gave it her all. You can tell when you get back the stems. The energy and emotion that she gave to not just 1 of my songs, but 3 of them, is something I cannot even explain but can only partially describe. I literally cried when I heard the first song she did for me. Julia’s writing and voice did that. You wont regret with Julia

She's up there with the best singers and talent you could think of. Her vocal technic and range are second to none, but more importantly she has an amazing ability to feel the song and bring the right emotion with her voice. She is also super cool to communicate with. Thanks Julia !

Interview with Julia Ross

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: One project I recently worked on that I’m especially proud of is a song I co-wrote and vocal produced for an up-and-coming artist who wanted to capture a deeply personal chapter of her life. She came in with just a rough idea and a few lines in her journal, and we built the entire song from the ground up—melody, lyrics, structure, and final vocals. I handled the topline, wrote the full lyric, and recorded all the vocals in my studio, including layered harmonies and background arrangements that really brought the emotion forward. What made it special wasn’t just the final product—it was watching her light up when she heard her own story come to life in a way she didn’t know was possible. That’s the kind of work I live for: taking someone’s truth and helping turn it into something powerful, polished, and deeply felt.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: At the moment, I’m working on a mix of exciting projects—from toplining and vocal production for independent pop artists to sync-driven songs aimed at film and TV placements. I’m also developing new music with my partner Ash Minor as part of our duo Last June, blending raw storytelling with cinematic pop-soul. Every project I’m involved in right now shares a common thread: purpose, emotion, and a deep love for the craft.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Brandon Colbein ! He is an insane vocalist and incredible songwriter

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: For me, it’s digital—with analog sensibilities. I love the flexibility and speed that digital offers, especially when I’m writing, comping vocals, or producing multiple layers quickly. It allows me to stay in the creative flow without technical limitations. That said, I’m always chasing warmth, character, and vibe—so I use analog-modeled plugins (like UAD and Waves) and tools that bring that vintage depth into the digital space. I’m not tied to the gear as much as I am to the feeling it creates. If it sounds honest and hits emotionally, that’s what matters most—whether it was tracked through tape or bounced in the box

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: My promise to my clients is to show up fully—creatively, professionally, and with heart. I’ll treat your song like it matters, because it does. You can count on me to deliver high-quality work that’s thoughtful, emotionally connected, and tailored to your vision. I’ll keep communication clear, be open to feedback, and make sure you feel heard every step of the way. My goal isn’t just to finish the project—it’s to make sure you walk away proud of what we’ve created together.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: What I love most about my job is the connection—getting to take someone’s idea, emotion, or story and help turn it into something real, something they can be proud of. There’s nothing like watching a song come to life from a rough idea to a fully produced, emotionally honest piece of music. I love the creativity, the collaboration, and the little moments in the process where everything clicks. But most of all, I love knowing that the work I do can make someone feel seen, understood, or inspired—whether it’s the artist I’m working with or the person listening on the other side.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: 1. “Can you write the topline and lyrics for me?” Absolutely. That’s one of my specialties. I love taking a track and crafting the melody and lyrics from the ground up, or building around a concept you already have. I’ll always make sure the song feels true to your voice and vision. ⸻ 2. “What’s included in your vocal delivery?” For demo vocals, I typically provide a lead vocal, two doubles, and at least one harmony track. For release-ready vocals, you’ll get full leads, doubles, harmonies, backgrounds, and ad-libs—fully comped and tuned, ready to drop into your session. ⸻ 3. “Can you sound like [insert artist name]?” I can definitely lean into a certain vocal style or tone if you have references, but I also bring my own emotional delivery and unique vocal texture. I’ll always prioritize making the song feel authentic and connected, rather than imitating. ⸻ 4. “What’s your turnaround time?” Typically 3 to 7 days, depending on the scope of the project. If there’s a tight deadline, I’ll always do my best to accommodate and communicate clearly. ⸻ 5. “Can I give feedback or request revisions?” Absolutely. I always want my clients to feel great about the final result, so I include a round (or two) of revisions depending on the project. My goal is to make sure it feels right to you.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: The biggest misconception about what I do is that I just “sing on a track” or “write a quick topline”—when in reality, there’s a lot more depth, precision, and emotional investment behind it. Every song I work on is a layered process: I’m not just delivering vocals or lyrics, I’m helping shape a story, dial in the emotion, arrange background parts that elevate the song, and produce a vocal that feels intentional and release-ready. It’s creative, yes—but it’s also highly technical, emotionally intuitive, and rooted in years of experience. People sometimes assume it’s fast and surface-level, but the truth is: I put everything I’ve got into every piece I deliver.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: When I’m working with a new client, I like to ask a few key questions to make sure I fully understand their vision and can deliver something they’ll be proud of: 1. What’s the emotion or message you want this song to convey? This helps me understand the heart of the project before I even start writing or recording. 2. Do you have any reference tracks or artists you’re inspired by for this? Knowing the sonic or stylistic direction makes it easier to tailor the topline, vocal delivery, and production approach. 3. Is this for release or just a demo? It helps me know how polished it needs to be and what kind of vocal or production detail to prioritize. 4. What parts do you need from me—lyrics, melody, full topline, vocals, harmonies, or all of the above? Some clients want a full vocal package, others just need demo vocals—clarity saves time. 5. Are there any lyrics or themes I should avoid? This keeps the song aligned with their brand or message and avoids any misfires creatively. 6. Do you want my name credited on the release or to remain anonymous? This helps me know what to expect in terms of splits and how to handle the master/publication side. 7. What’s your timeline and any important deadlines? So I can make sure we stay on track and deliver on time.

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: If you’re looking to hire a provider like me, my biggest piece of advice is: know what you want the song to feel like. You don’t need to have all the technical terms or a fully produced track—just be clear on the emotion, the story, or the energy you’re trying to capture. That’s what helps me show up fully for your vision. Also, trust matters. I always aim to make the process collaborative and easy, so the more open we are with communication, the better the final result. And lastly—don’t be afraid to ask questions. This is your song, and it should feel like you from the first note to the final bounce.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: If I were stranded on a desert island and could only bring 5 pieces of gear, I’d go with a balance of practicality and creative power: 1. Slate Digital ML-1 Microphone – It gives me the flexibility of multiple mic models in one, so I can shape vocals however I need, even in a minimal setup. 2. Universal Audio Apollo Twin – Clean preamps, reliable interface, and access to all my go-to UAD plugins—this one’s non-negotiable. 3. MacBook Pro with Logic Pro – My creative command center. I could write, record, produce, and mix all in one place. 4. Beyerdynamic DT 770 Headphones – Comfortable for long sessions and super accurate for tracking and vocal comping. 5. MIDI Keyboard (like the Arturia MiniLab) – Compact but powerful. Great for sketching chords, melodies, and programming when inspiration hits. If there’s solar power on that island, I’m good to go. I’d probably write an emotional ballad to the nearest coconut.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I’ve been in music professionally for over 26 years. I started young, signing my first record deal at 17 as part of the pop-rock band Everlife, which was signed to Hollywood Records and featured on multiple Disney soundtracks and tours. After the band chapter, I shifted into working as a touring background vocalist, performing with artists like Miley Cyrus, Carly Rae Jepsen, The Chainsmokers, and Sting—often leading sections and arranging background vocals on arena and stadium tours. Alongside touring, I fell in love with songwriting and vocal production. Over the years, I’ve written for global artists including BTS (earning a Billboard #1 and RIAA gold/platinum certifications for “ON”), TWICE, FIFTY FIFTY, CL, and BOA, and I’ve amassed over 200 million Spotify streams through original music, features, and dance records. Now, I work full-time as a songwriter, vocalist, and vocal producer—collaborating with artists worldwide through platforms like SoundBetter, and through my company Mossor Music, which I founded to bridge music and philanthropy. Everything I do is built on decades of experience, and a deep passion for helping artists tell their stories in a way that’s both honest and impactful.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: I’d describe my style as emotional, dynamic, and intentional. Whether I’m writing, singing, or vocal producing, everything I do is rooted in feeling—I want the listener to connect on a deep, human level. Vocally, my tone leans warm and expressive, with the ability to shift from delicate and intimate to powerful and bold depending on the moment. I’m drawn to rich melodies, unexpected harmony layers, and lyrics that say something real. My background in pop, K-pop, and live performance gives me the flexibility to shape a song for both the stage and the studio, always with heart and purpose behind it

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: I’d love to work with Labrinth because he creates from a place of pure emotion and fearlessness. His music isn’t confined to genre—it’s cinematic, spiritual, raw, and wildly creative, and that’s the kind of space I love to work in. He trusts his instincts, uses the human voice as both an instrument and a storyteller, and isn’t afraid to break the rules in service of something deeper. Collaborating with someone like that would push me in all the best ways and allow us to create something truly original and soul-driven

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: If I were to share a music production tip, it would be this: don’t overproduce the emotion out of the song. It’s easy to get caught up in stacking layers and perfecting every detail, but sometimes the most powerful moments come from what you don’t add. I always try to leave space for the vocal to breathe and let the emotion lead—whether that means pulling instruments back in the verse or letting a raw vocal take stay untouched. Trust the feeling more than the formula.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: I usually work on pop and all its subgenres—whether it’s emotional ballads, dance-pop, indie-pop, or more cinematic, sync-friendly tracks. I also do a lot of work in K-pop, EDM, and occasionally dive into R&B, singer-songwriter, or country when the right project comes along. I love blending strong melodic structure with storytelling, and I gravitate toward songs that have both heart and commercial potential. At the end of the day, if it’s rooted in emotion and has space for a great vocal, I’m all in

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: My strongest skill is my ability to translate emotion into melody and performance—taking a feeling, a story, or even just a vibe, and turning it into something that feels honest and unforgettable. Over the years, I’ve also developed a strong instinct for vocal production and harmony. Having spent 28 years singing in a three-part harmony band and serving as a section leader for backing vocals on major tours, I’ve learned how to craft unique, layered backgrounds that elevate a song without overpowering it. Whether I’m writing, recording, or producing vocals, I bring a deep understanding of how to shape a moment—so the listener not only hears it, but feels

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: What I bring to a song is a deep understanding of both emotion and structure—how to make a listener feel something while still delivering a polished, market-ready track. I have a strong sense of melody and phrasing, and I know how to shape a topline that sticks. Vocally, I bring versatility, tone, and texture that can shift from intimate and vulnerable to bold and dynamic, depending on what the song calls for. But more than anything, I listen—to the music, to the artist, to the story we’re trying to tell. I don’t just want a song to sound good—I want it to mean something.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: My writing process usually starts with melody—once I lock in something that feels emotional and catchy, I build the lyrics around that, always aiming to tell a story that feels real and connected to the track. I keep the client in the loop as I go, whether it’s sharing rough ideas early on or checking in before finalizing lyrics or vocals. I want the artist to feel like it’s their song, not just something I delivered—so collaboration and clear communication are always part of the process.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: My studio setup is designed to keep the workflow fast, the vocals clean, and the vibe inspiring. I work primarily in Logic Pro, pairing either my Slate Digital ML-1 or Shure SM7B—depending on the tone I’m going for—with a Universal Audio Apollo Twin interface. I run vocals through a custom vocal chain using a mix of Waves plugins, UAD processing (including the Hittsville EQs), and rich reverbs like the Lexicon 224 or Waves RVerb to dial in exactly the right feel. The room is treated and tuned for vocal tracking, so whether I’m cutting a demo, feature-ready vocals, or building a topline from scratch, the sound is always industry-standard and release-ready. The setup gives me enough flexibility to capture everything from intimate, emotional takes to powerful, layered pop performances—quickly and with intention.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: I’ve always been inspired by artists and creators who blend emotional depth with bold vision. Sia’s ability to write raw, honest lyrics that cut straight to the heart while maintaining commercial appeal really resonates with how I approach songwriting. Julia Michaels is another huge inspiration—her conversational yet cutting lyrical style feels so human and unfiltered, and she has a gift for turning personal moments into universally felt songs. Imogen Heap’s experimental production and use of voice as texture remind me to keep pushing sonic boundaries. I also connect deeply with people like Linda Perry and Ryan Tedder—songwriters who aren’t afraid to lead with vulnerability while building entire worlds behind the scenes. Labrinth’s cinematic style and spiritual approach to music-making inspire me to stay soulful in every detail, and artists like H.E.R. remind me that music can be both personal and powerful. I gravitate toward creatives who make art with intention and impact—those who understand that a song isn’t just sound, it’s a story, a movement, sometimes even a lifeline.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: Most of the work I do for my clients on SoundBetter revolves around bringing their songs to life through vocals and toplining. Whether they need a powerful lead vocal for a pop release, intimate harmonies to elevate a ballad, or a full topline written from scratch, I’m there to help shape their vision into something emotionally resonant and ready for release. I’ve worked across a wide range of genres—pop, EDM, indie, K-pop, and more—and I approach every project with care, precision, and a deep love for storytelling through music. Whether it’s a demo or a feature-ready vocal, my goal is always to serve the song and help my clients feel proud of what we create together!
