Interview with Naman Sachdev (Whack Studio)
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: For the most part Rock, Metal and Progressive music.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Though most of my commercial work has been for heavier music, I absolutely love playing funk, plus some softer genres. I think because of this I am able to deliver relatively "less obvious" drum parts in songs which can really make the song shine through.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring a very strong sense of groove.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Before starting on any song I make sure to understand what exactly the client is looking for. This can be in the form of reference tracks or drums they may have programmed themselves. Next I load up the track in my DAW and mark and colour code all the different parts to get a birds eye view of the whole song and understand the structure better. This lets me understand the overall picture better. I then conceptualize what each part could have and then sit on the drum kit to figure out individual parts.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My home studio has a hybrid electronic drum kit with a mix of a Roland and an Alesis kit. With these I use drum libraries like Addictive Drums, Get Good Drums & Steven Slate Drums. All this is supported by my trusted Alienware.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: If it comes to drummers Benny Greb, Nate Smith and Matt Garstka have to be my top inspirations! These guys are absolute legends on the drums.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Rock, Metal and Progressive - these are the 3 types of tracks I usually play drums on! I do play a lot of other stuff as well, but have a long background of playing heavy music so most clients know me for that.
