Etan Sekons on SoundBetter

I always play for the song and give the song what it needs. I want you to be 100% psyched about the tracks you get from me! I've been playing and recording music for over 20 years. I have worked with Hayes Carll, The Blue Man Group, and many other artists / bands. I have a full studio for recording & mixing.

I'm a session guitarist, producer, recording engineer, mixer, and songwriter. My focus is on the song and what it needs. I want there to be clear communication, and I want you to be completely satisfied with the tracks you get from me.

I play Electric & Acoustic guitars, plus Dobro and Lap Steel. I also mix and I can help in the creative process with producing, and recording if needed. I have a wide variety of guitars, amps, and pedals to choose from for a large tonal palette. I love to experiment with sound and create new things, but I can also get sounds similar to what you hear on other records. It all depends on what you want and what we discuss.

I have access to a wide range of amazing session musicians here in Austin, TX and can help with getting other instruments on your recordings.

I started out playing and recording in New York City where I played with the Blue Man Group (among many other projects) and worked at RMP studios. I got to work with artists like The Bestie Boys, and Lauryn Hill at RMP. I moved to Austin, TX in 2008 where I set up my own studio. I am currently the touring guitarist for Hayes Call (Nashville / Americana), and play with many artists across all genres of music.

As a performing recording artist I have worked with Etan at varying capacities. Etan is a tasteful and skilled multi-instrumentalist and has vast live performance experience. He is also a knowledgeable and disciplined producer/engineer with a great ear for earthy and organic recordings. One of Etan's greatest strengths is his work ethic! You can be assured that your project will be taken seriously and will be done in a creative, yet professional manner. Without reservation, I highly recommend Etan for any and all musical services that he offers!

Etan brings a wealth of knowledge, organization and creativity to every one of his projects and as a bonus, he's pleasant, caring, and very patient. As a producer, he was there every step of the way: producing, recording, organizing musicians, playing guitar and dobro, mixing and last but not least, overseeing the mastering. He's definitely multi-talented, multi-operational and over delivers on value for what his price points are. I would highly recommend his work to anyone as he knows how to shape and build sound while staying true to the intentions of the writer and the soul of the song(s).

Etan played guitar several times in the international folk band that I played in. He also recorded us in his studio. I liked that Etan knew exactly how to mic everyone in the band so that we sounded fantastic in the recording. Later, I asked Etan to record my CD, which included various musicians from Austin. Again, he knew exactly how to mic, record, and edit percussion, harp, vocals, accordion, strings, piano, etc.
Etan has a great ear and feel for music of many genres. He is also very easy to work with, professional, and positive. I definitely recommend him !!!

Etan consistency delivers professional, well crafted quality. Etan has a well developed point of view and "voice" that he skillfully blends to serve the song and realize the vision of each artist he works with. The vibe is always positive and creative and the results consistently exceed expectations. I cannot recommend Etan enough!

Etan is not only one of the best musicians and producers I know, he’s one of my favorite humans. He’s worked with me as a guitarist, bandleader, co-writer, producer, engineer, and consultant on my home studio. I would seriously endorse his services for any of the above! Etan is super skilled, attentive, detail oriented, intuitive, and communicative. He listens to the needs of the project and elevates every project I’ve witnessed him in. 14/10 highly recommend

Interview with Etan Sekons

  1. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  2. A: I love both formats. I grew up on analog, but my current setup is a hybrid, analog & digital system. Digital makes everything faster and easier, plus it sounds great! I mix through a Neve summing mixer and use my outboard gear a lot. I love the warmth of the tubes and transformers in the analog realm, and you get a certain cohesion from analog summing that you don't get in the box.

  3. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  4. A: I recommend Luke Moller if you need fiddle, violin, or mandolin.

  5. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  6. A: I love to bring peoples ideas to life. Making music is my favorite thing to do. Sometimes clients have a clear vision of what they want and sometimes not. I love the collaboration and hearing someone say "Wow! that sounds so great!" or "That's even better that I expected"

  7. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  8. A: I've been playing and recording for over 20 years. I started in New York City with bands, a Broadway show, and a number of studios. Austin, TX is my current home base for touring and recording.

  9. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  10. A: I do a lot of Americana lately, but I have worked on many genres: Rock, Funk, Folk, Country, Blues, Soul, Singer / Songwriter, World, Indie, Instrumental, Experimental, Fusion

  11. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  12. A: Playing, Producing, Recording, & Mixing

  13. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  14. A: I always try to play what I think is best for the song. I like to be creative, but I can also do the "sound like this" thing. I will listen to a song and try out parts and tones until I think I've got the right vibe. Usually clients are very happy with what I send out, but if they want to try something else I am happy to comply.

  15. Q: What's your typical work process?

  16. A: I will speak with the client and figure out exactly what they want. Usually I do a pre-production session for new recordings. Recording / tracking time depends on the amount of tracks. Mixing usually takes a few days depending on my workload. I will send a copy to the client for notes / approval. If there are notes or changes to be made I will complete them and follow up to make sure the client is completely satisfied.

  17. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  18. A: Full gear list available on my website: http://www.etansekons.com/gear-list.html

  19. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  20. A: Too many to mention!

  21. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  22. A: I usually get hired to play guitar. Often I am playing on tracks that I am also producing and recording in my studio. At least half the time I will mix these projects too.
