Gustavo Basualdo on SoundBetter

Versatile blend of high-energy and subtle rhythms, a combination of classic grooves and world percussion influenced by my South American roots.

While I enjoy classic drum grooves, I specialize in the blend of modern drumming and world percussion.
Originally from Argentina, I have been playing drums for most of my life. I have toured and recorded with successful artists in South America. I continue exploring new musical experiences to enrich and enhance my craft.

Great musician who not only delivered the work on time but also got himself inside our head and knew exactly what was needed without us explicitly stating it.
I’m sure we’ll work more in the future.

I worked with Gustavo on a fun (remote) collaboration project where I contributed a single electric guitar track. Not only is Gustavo a fantastic percussionist, but has a fantastic ear for hearing the feel of a song and instrumentation and taking it in a new direction that I never imagined! I highly recommend his work.

On both live gigs and in a studio setting, Gustavo took my original songs and brought them to life with thoughtful, creative approaches to the percussion and arrangements. Just using my old scratch (composition/sketch) tracks, he added drums/percussion and arranged them in his studio, taking them to a professional sounding level. He can take almost any project and make it groove and shine!

I've played music with Gustavo socially on several occasions and know him to be a great musician competent in many styles who translates his joy when playing music into what you hear. When my band needed some extra latin style percussion for a recording on our new EP (I am the drummer) I turned to Gustavo who enthusiastically came up with some really amazing parts and gave us a lot of options to choose from. He's a true professional who is easy to work with and will improve anything he touches.

Interview with Gustavo Basualdo

  1. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  2. A: I have a unique blend of styles and influences that I try to showcase in my work. The audio sample give an idea of what that sounds like.

  3. Q: What's your typical work process?

  4. A: For me its all about understanding what the artist wants. That is my starting point. From there I analyze the song, the story being told, and how I can add to that story line to make it even more interesting to the listener. Then I adjust the sound of the drums and what I play to try and match that vision. Less is more is the foundation to what I create.

  5. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  6. A: I have special admiration for drummers and musicians that help make a song better with simplicity and a craft for the sound, Ash Soan and Dylan Wissing are some of my favorites studio drummers. I also like drummers that come up with the most surprising part to enhance a song, like Mark Guiliana.

  7. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  8. A: Premier Signia 5 piece drumset, and an extra Tama snare drum. I use Zildjian and Meinl cymbals, Audix microphones, and a Focusrite 18i20 interface. For percussion I have an assorted set of effects, congas, bongos, timbales, from various brands.

  9. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  10. A: I usually record drums and percussions for my clients. Sometimes I get specific guidance on what they need. Other times they give me the freedom to try what I feel fits the songs and provide alternatives.
