Incredible product at great prices, can't go wrong!

Interview with Liska Steele

  1. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  2. A: The biggest misconception about me is that I do not produce my own music. Though I do work with my father on much of my music, he would vouch that I am a more than competent music producer (just not as much as his lifelong experience)

  3. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  4. A: What sort of vibe are you looking for? Do you have any references for me to listen to? At what date do you need this done by?

  5. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  6. A: Be specific in what you are asking for and come to me with as clear of a vision as possible!

  7. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  8. A: Midi keyboard, SSLR, Microphone, interface, and headphones

  9. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  10. A: I come from a lineage of working musicians. My great grandfather had a Chicago big band in which my grandfather was a guitarist. My grandfather went on to be a live guitarist and session guitarist, and my own father is a music producer as well. I grew up in the studio singing and working on projects with my father both for fun and for professional projects. I've been working on my solo career since the age of 15 and have been producing and recording my own vocals since the age of 18. I have performed live all across the city of Chicago, have collaborated with other known artists in the area and have been recognized for my work by publications such as Deli Magazine, Off-Kilter Magazine and Badluck Records,

  11. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  12. A: I would like to work with Bjork because she has such a deep, emotion-driven understanding of music writing and production and I've learned so much from her interviews and performances alone.

  13. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  14. A: This is not an uncommon tip however it is one I find makes a very big difference: you should almost always be recording your vocals with one headphone out of your ear. This way you can hear how your voice is sounding naturally, outside of your recording and have a better understanding of how you're sounding in terms of pitch.

  15. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  16. A: I usually work on pop music, but I have experience working in different genres and within different decades of soundscapes. I've sung rock, pop, 60s pop, 70s disco, and even dabble in theatrical work. I am open to any idea I'm approached with and excel in emanating a range of specific vocal styles.

  17. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  18. A: My strongest skillset is my voice. I am very strict about being perfectly on pitch, working the mic to achieve a proper balance between head voice and belting and have over 13 years of studio singing experience.

  19. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  20. A: I bring spontaneity, raw emotion and an "I can't believe she just said that" aspect to each and every song I am a part of. I make it a point to have at least one moment that makes the listener think a bit, and it's generally the part I enjoy most about songwriting.

  21. Q: What's your typical work process?

  22. A: Generally once I sit down to record, I like to at least have a complete rough version done and then go back to it in the following days to bring it to the standard it needs to be at.

  23. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  24. A: I record all my vocals on protools with a road NT2 through SSL Mic preamps, AKG 414, Shure SM 7B recordings are available for tighter sounds. I record my vocals flat and send back raw files with compression and without compression.

  25. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  26. A: I am inspired by artists such as Bjork, Imogen Heap, Kate Bush and Grimes, who use music production as a means of artistic exploration. I like to start off a song with a more avante-garde sound inspired by whatever I am feeling in the moment, then whittle it back to a pop/mainstream point of view that is easier to consume and recognize for the general public.

    Liska Steele "Paranoid"

"Liska Steele has a sound that emulates some of the quintessential bigger names of the 80s, namely Cyndi Lauper. On her last formal LP, “Crusher”, she nailed the nostalgia of that era extremely well while simultaneously spinning it to her liking, creating a very unique artistic persona in 2020."
